Default Audi price configurator and interesting Audi rep response

So last week several priced the new A4 using the Audi online configurator with MUCH higher pricing than previously understood. Spoke at length with the Audi sales rep yesterday and here are some scenarios:

His new "official" price-$40,500 for 2.0 loaded w/ premium pkg, paint, Nav- I was quoted $36K 2 weeks ago, configurator now runs $42K

His new "official" price-$47,000 for 3.2 loaded premium w/ 18" wheels & Nav- I was quoted $42K 2 weeks ago and config now has it at $49,185 and there are MORE options yet to go

A couple points- rep says to me "Config is way off, I'm under by $1,500"... what happened to those "guaranteed" prices from the traveling road show I heard two weeks ago... hmmmm and I was "assured" these were "very accurate" prices

2nd point- at $49K+ (before TTT) for a 268hp 3.2 A4, I can jump up to a S5 LOADED out the door at under $62K and the cars aren't even in the same solar system.

I like the direction Audi is headed (R8, S5)... Sad that the A4 is coming in at that pricing, and an honest reply from the rep on the big price bump would have been nice rather than his "CYA" response... if money was no object, the R8 would be on order (who wouldn't ).

My new car search has now lead me to narrow my choices to pre-owned 911 C4 or new S5, 535xi or 335xi distant 3rd... after driving the A4 and despite it's looks, $50K IMO is just too way much for that car....

Agreed. I think they put it about 10% or so too high for each respective model. Now, if they had that upcoming 3.0 with 290 HP that I heard about, and a 250ish HP 2.0T, I could maybe justify it a bit more.

as previously stated, the 2.0T is now rated at 258 ft/lbs torque [211 hp].

...and I wouldn't pay $50K for any version of the A4 either. I bought my 2008 TT with <1500 miles on it for $8000 off the orig MSRP which was $41K;

I'm guessing - give the 2009 A4 some time and you'll see some huge discounts on them.

btw here's an 08 S4 for $48K brand new http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...ice=&cardist=0
