ae86's... i thought they were a fading away already?
My friend's spoiled little brother has been bugging the rich dad about getting him an AE86. (But of course right?) My friend being a mall rat and clueless about cars asked me "where can i find a shop that sells AE86" (lol). At first I thought she was asking for "American Eagle outfitter" because shopping is just part of her life style like eating and sleeping LOL.
So today I got another link from her and the car looked good. I'm forwading the link to the experts here on CL. Comments and ideas are greatly appreciated.
*To me these old car's gonna be a PITA and dangerous to drive for a first time driver. And HOT during the summer too!

This has a 13B rotary engine in it. These are famous for eating oil and engine fires. I'd be careful. If you get a drift car like this one is set up for you're bound to rip through tons of parts because drifting destroys cars. Given it has upgraded components, drifting kills.
A stock AE86 is slow as hell actually it's just that they were so light and nimble they were great for drifting.
The amount of money that went into that car seems off for the asking price.

AE86's are great cars. But not with a 13B.
On a positive note, the spoiled little brother will be forced to become a mechanic at some point, most likely on the side of the road.

i just sold my
but then again it was a $10,000 ae86.
clean stock ae86's run $4-6k depending on condition and if they are GTS. SR5's can be had from $1500-3k
don't get them with high powered motors, suggest new drivers to get the bare bone stock or sr5 to understand how to drive in the first place.

Netjunky, wow! Your AE86 was sick! Mine is a 1985 and it's under construction still. It will be 4AG-E powered n/a, high-comp. Bottom end from a 20V motor and a 16V head. It won't be off the charts in h.p., but should be a runner. I've owned the car since 1994 and don't plan to sell it.
For the kid being spoiled, I think that comes in because he probably saw a highly-modified AE86 at a drift event, a few in Gran Turismo, and the one Takumi drives and said, "I want one." Get ready for a disappointing experience, kid. They are great cars, even in stock form, in my opinion. However, the stockers don't come close to the drifter cars, heavily-modded cars, and fictional cars.
I figure this kid will end up with an WRX, but only if he can stand the horrible sound of the turboed boxer engine. Yuck. Double yuck for styling.
