Post Toyota's first V8 diesel

I had pleasure to attend training on new V8 diesel in Toyota Land Cruiser 200.

It is completly new unit, made from 2x 2.2l D-4D engines basically.

Tech info:

Number of cylinders 8 in V line
Valve mechanism: 32 valve DOHC
Fuel injection system: Common rail type
Displacement (cc): 4461
Maximum output (kW/DIN hp/rpm): 210/286/3600
Maximum torque (Nm/rpm): 650/1600-2800
Compression ratio: 16.8:1
Bore x stroke (mm x mm): 86.0 x 96.0
Engine code: 1VD-FTV
Best part is MPG - 10.3 in EU combined cycle which is only 1L more than 4cly LC120 (GX!) which is a lot smaller vehicle with smaller weight, size and 170hp engine!

New Diesel V8

Engine block is made from iron for reliability reasons however is it specially casted iron which lowered the weight of the engine by 20kg compared to standard casting. Total engine weight is 325kg. Other parts are made by aluminium and specialized plastics.

It uses 3rd generation common rail with very high pressures of 1.8 bar. It does not use piezo injectors for this application for longer durability.

On road, it is faster than 4.7 V8 but as with every diesel engine in the world, you get maximum of 2500 rpm of power range. At constant speed, inside of cabin is very quiet, even quieter than V8, but if you are gunning it, you will hear usual D-4D clatter in the background. In the mornings it is very loud on the outside.

Best part is that not only it is quicker, it gets arund 40%-50% better fuel consumption than V8. Dont think it is frugal - it is V8 engine afterall, but you should be able to get over 20 mpg on average with it, which is a lot better than petrol engine in real life.

I really dont expect Lexus to get diesels in USA due to the noise, but expect them in more and more Toyota products.

I think you may have understated it's power range unless you were speaking of peak torque.

"The Euro IV-compliant, 32-valve V8 delivers 151kW of power at 3400rpm and replaces six-cylinder diesel and turbo-diesel engines. Peak torque of 430Nm is reached at just 1200rpm and held all the way to 3200rpm - the flattest torque curve among all of Toyota's engines."

thats Aussie version, Euro version is a bit stronger and has maximum torque from 1,600 to 2,800. Since that article is from very long time ago, I am not sure if it applies to the engine anymore. It might have been predictions.

In real life, it comes and passes quickly.

STIG - 10.3 l/100km, or 23 MPG.

edit: oh yeah, thats LC70 engine for Aussie, much simpler version of same engine... with 50% torque less.

would it really get 5.7 engine? Maybe.

I bet we might see V6 diesel in Europe for it. Now that would be cool... I dont think we will see V8 diesel in GX, price gulf between LC120 and LC200 in Europe is just huge.

After the LX 470 becoming the LX 570 most likely the GX 470 will become the GX 570. It would be cool if Lexus would offer a V6 or V8 diesel in the U.S...
