Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force concept is a G-Class for the future

Looking to create an entrant for this year's LA Design Challenge, Mercedes-Benz came up with the Ener-G-Force to fit the theme of Highway Patrol Vehicle 2025. Mercedes-Benz says that the styling of the Ener-G-Force builds on many cues from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, and like the original G-Wagen introduced in 1979 as a civilian version of a military vehicle, it didn't take much imagination to envision a civilian version of the Ener-G-Force. Of course, it wouldn't be a futuristic concept vehicle without some sort of advanced powertrain, and the concept unveiled today delivers on this front as well.

From a design standpoint, the Ener-G-Force infuses many elements seen on the G-Class but with a much more modern interpretation giving it a new, yet recognizable appearance. These cues include the sunk-in headlights, turn signals/running lights mounted atop the front fenders, the long, flat roofline and the low, rectangular taillights, but the Ener-G-Force ditches the G-Class' boxy lines in favor of a more rounded shape.

One of the interesting elements of the concept is the roof rack. While it looks like a cargo rack that could be used for a safari, it is actually a way for the vehicle to collect water to store in tanks to then be transferred to a converter that creates hydrogen to power the fuel cells. The batteries for this system are built into the rocker panels, and the hypothetical range for this conceptual system is 500 miles of zero-emission driving. For off-roading purposes, the system uses four independent motors at each wheel and a roof-mounted scanner that adjusts the suspension to best fit the road conditions and terrain.

The Ener-G-Force was one of six entrants for the 2012 LA Design Challenge, and the winning design will be announced on November 29 as a part of the LA Auto Show.

If they significantly refine it and make it to not look so bulbous and rounded, then they'd have a winner. Then again that would be the same as the current model, which is what I already have and will keep until there are significant changes.

Default Mercedes planing a G-Class inspired GLB crossover for 2019 - report

Could offer seating for up to seven people

According to reports out of Germany, Mercedes is planning to launch a G-Class inspired crossover in the fall of 2019.

Details are limited but Autobild is reporting the model will be a lifestyle vehicle that will wear the GLB moniker. It will reportedly be based on the same platform as the next-generation A-Class which is due in the spring of 2018.

Little else is known about the crossover but it will reportedly offer seating for up to seven people. Front-wheel drive could be standard but all-wheel drive should be optional. There could also be an off-road package but there's no word on what it would include.

If everything pans out, the GLB will slot above the GLA and cost slightly more than its smaller sibling.

I undertand this is not a replacement, but what the hell are they smoking now?! Bastardizing the revered G-Class's rich heritage and name for some mock GLB-Class.

So it's like MBZ's "Highlander" but looks rugged like a "4Runner" is what I'm getting from this article

Default New 2018 Mercedes G-Class Mule Looks The Same But It’s Far From It

It may look the same but upon closer inspection you’ll notice that this camouflaged mule is actually a lot wider.

Mercedes doesn’t want to spoil the recipe of the G-Class as it currently represents a massive sales success for the company so what they did instead is add an extra 10 cm to the width of the car.

This way the new 2018 G-Class will not only offer significantly more room in its cabin, but will also finally be able to better master the ridiculous amounts of power given to it by AMG. This car was never meant to blast down the Autobahn at over 200km/h (124mph) and the time has come for the icon to get improved.

The new G-Class is also going to be much lighter, with our intel talking about as much as 400kg (880 pounds) dropped from the current model’s weight figure. Just remember that the current G-Class architecture has remained pretty much unchanged for the last 37 years, so that should explain the huge drop in weight.

As for the range-topping AMG versions, these will now use the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine we’ve come to know from their other models but Mercedes will also offer a good range of engine options to the lesser models as well.

The cabin is also going to be all-new, with bits and pieces borrowed from the current E-Class, meaning lots of cutting-edge tech will also be offered in the mighty off-roader too.

The new generation will be produced by Magna in Graz, Austria where the current generation is also built. Rumors suggest that the current G-Class might continue its production alongside its successor for a while, at least in its non-AMG forms.

Default Mercedes "Baby G-Wagen" GLB Reportedly Due In 2019

The Geländewagen may have started life as a straightforward army vehicle, but its modernized successor has become a luxury item and a status symbol reserved only for the wealthy.

It has always been a rugged, analogue “cross country” vehicle, but few that bought it used it as such, which is partly why, in the early 2000s, Mercedes started to build the G-Wagen for the posh, high-end market after introducing the AMG variants.

Nowadays, sales are doing well, even if it has a starting MSRP of $119,900. Thus, the heads of Daimler thought they could benefit even more from the G-Class’ success and plans a "baby G-Wagen", tentatively named the GLB.

Positioned between the GLA and GLC, the GLB will be underpinned by Merc’s upcoming MFA2 platform, and will reportedly come in both short and long-wheelbase variants.

According to Auto Express, it will be launched in 2019 and offer a few of the G-Class’ traits, including its chunky design language, in a more accessible package. Visually, it will borrow styling cues from the Ener-G Force concept that was unveiled at the 2012 LA Motor Show.

Default New Mercedes-Benz G-Class Coming To Conquer The Roads Near You

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class might still be popular, but even Mercedes concedes that almost four decades are a bit too much, so a new generation is in the pipeline.

Scooped on several occasions, the all-new 4x4 is back in yet another short spy video, which shows it testing on public roads.

There are some reports that a massive 400 kg (880 pounds) will be dropped from its total weight. This doesn't seem that impossible given that G-Wagen was launched 37 years ago.

While it will still be able to tackle sand dunes, rocky slopes or whatever its future buyers will throw at it, the SUV will gain some features from the latest generation E-Class inside and, of course, all the niceties one expects from a premium SUV these days.

Merc's Next-Generation G-Class Is Hiding Under This Tester

For an off-roader with an architecture that is almost four decades old, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class continues to attract buyers from different parts of the globe, so imagine what a new generation will do.

Making its web debut on video in test mule form, the hairy-chested SUVmaintains its famous boxy appearance, but what seems to be pretty much the same, will actually turn out to completely revolutionize it.

For starters, the all-new G-Class is said to gain an additional 10 cm to its width, which will not only translate into a roomier cabin, but will also improve its cornering abilities. Word on the street has it that the upcoming model will shed as much as 400 kg (880 lbs) from the current generation's weight, and this, combined with the extra oomph coming in the AMG versions, will make it significantly more agile.

Speaking of AMG, a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine will be used in the range-topping models, while the rest of the family will have to do with other petrol and diesel mills.

As for its official reveal date, nothing is known so far, but since Daimler's future product map hasn’t revealed anything on such a possible SUV for 2017, our bet would be on a 2018 launch, which would make the next G-Class a 2019 MY.
