Default Chevrolet Bolt EV concept arrives at NAIAS with 200+ mile range [videos]

Production version will cost around $30,000

It turns out the rumor was true as Chevrolet has taken the wraps off the Bolt EV concept today in Detroit at 2015 NAIAS.

The concept takes the shape of a small crossover with short front & rear overhangs and is built by using a combination of lightweight materials such as aluminum, carbon fiber, magnesium and woven mesh. It boasts aerodynamically-optimized vented rear fenders which help increase range while LED technology was used for both headlights and taillights.

Chevrolet says the interior cabin offers a generous amount of headroom and legroom which combined with the see-thorough roof enhances the feel of spaciousness. It's a high-tech cabin with slim seats installed on exposed aluminum pedestals while the minimalistic center console adopts a floating design and hosts a 10-inch capacitive touchscreen display.

Hardware specifications have not been released but the Bolt EV concept is capable of providing a range of more than 200 miles (322 km) and if built, it would carry an estimated starting price of $30,000.

Though slightly larger, it looks like the Bolt was (more or less) designed to compete with Mitsubishi's all-electric I-MiEV. Yes, Mitsubishi actually sells this contraption in the U.S., though I've actually only seen one or two on the road.

i think the bolt is easily the best looking compared to those others. of course we've yet to see what it looks like after the bean counters have their say.

Default Doesn't the Chevrolet Bolt Concept Look Close-to-Production?

Click here to view more live photos

Those were the words used by GM CEO Mary Barra to describe the new compact EV by Chevrolet. The Bolt has neither been confirmed for production nor denied, but it’s a bit too eerily similar to a BMW i3 for them to not be seriously considering it.

It looks like a close to production model too, or it looks like one now that the line between concepts and series models has been blurred. I mean, that interior looks fully-functional and could probably see production with minimal changes – it’d be in the same design league as the posher i3, although positioned a bit further downmarket.

With a prophesied range of around 200 miles or 320 km, a big airy and roomy interior and futuristic design, the Bolt could be a hit for an estimated price of $30,000.

Does it not look like a close-to-production concept to you too?

The i-MiEV is definitely NOT the target for the Bolt concept car. The Mitsubishi is barely passable as transportation with ~62 miles in projected range. It's a glorified enclosed electric golf cart that you'll find mostly in beach towns in California. The Bolt is going for 200 miles of range and targeting the next Tesla Model 3 and likely next generation of Nissan Leaf, etc, as a full, substantive vehicle with high tech features and full usability.

My earlier post was not meant to suggest that the Mi-EV was actually the Bolt's target. Sorry if that was the impression you got....perhaps I could have worded it a little better. You and I both agree on the Mi-EV being a overpriced golf cart. In fact, Chevy's own all-electric Spark EV, which will (likely) sell in a lower price-class than the Bolt, closer-approximates the Mi-EV, though even it is somewhat of an improvement. Hoovey2411 brings up a good point that the Bolt might (?) also be considered in the BMW i3's class, though the i3, being a BMW product, will likely cost more.

indeed.. Unless you think EVs all compare to each other, they are not competitors. Neither it is Tesla competitor like media said.
