ANTHONY, Fla. -- Five people were killed early Saturday when a BMW they were riding in flew off an elevated runway at an airstrip and was split into several pieces, according to police.
Florida Highway officers said a gray 2008 BMW was traveling on an airstrip after 3:30 a.m. Saturday near Jumbolair Aviation Estates when it sailed off the 80- to 85-foot elevated runway.
FHP Lt. Mike Burroughs told the Ocala Star-Banner that the vehicle traveled 200 feet and hit a large tree about 15 feet above the ground.
Three of the passengers were ejected from the vehicle upon impact.
Authorities told the Ocala Star-Banner that Jacob James Casey, 19, and James Devon Hime, 19 were killed in the crash. The other three victims, all men, were not identified.
Neighbors in the 1400 block of Northeast 95th Street said that they were awakened by a bang that shook their house.
FHP officials investigating the crash said there were skid marks at the end of the runway.

can't even tell what bmw that was... i'd guess maybe a 335i coupe? but can't tell
just read a story on cnn, said it was a private airstrip that had taxiways that went up to two gated communities, so i'm guessing it's one of those private airstrip communities.... victims were 18-20.
So kids probably got a brand new bmw, wanted to find out how fast it could go... article also said there's evidence that they tried to brake, car got sideways and went off the end of the airstrip

That's near where I live. Oh and that runway is next to the development John Travolta lives in and that's why he lives there, so he can fly his many planes in and out easily. Looking at the pic below, the BMW raced from bottom to top and went off on the left side at the top of the pic and flew off the edge of that embankment straight into a tree in the woods.
The 5 young guys had been to a party - my guess is one of them lived in the development or nearby and someone wanted to show the car off.

Sad for sure, they were not on the street and instead figured this would be the safer route to open her up. You would think they would have driven the strip first to see what was at the other end.....but as alcohol was in the picture as it seems it was then they probably did not give it much thought.
To have an airstrip in your backyard, crazy.
