Lexus makes debut in Indonesia
JAKARTA, Nov 8, 2007 -- TM -- Lexus, the premium brand of Toyota Motor Corp., is making debut in the growing Indonesian automotive market this week, seeking to sell 70 units as a start.
Local subsidiary PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) launched four models comprising ultra-luxury sedans LS460L, GS300 and IS300 and sport utility vehicle RX350, with a price range of between 790 million rupiah (86,717 US dollars) and 2 billion rupiah (219,538 dollars).
The company said it targeted to sell 70 units this year and another 150 for next year.
Toyota has spent 25 billion rupiah (2.7 million dollars) on a three-story, art gallery-style showroom in Central Jakarta.
"We will first introduce the luxurious Lexus experience to the Indonesian customers in this very beginning. We don't just sell cars," TAM director Johnny Darmawan told reporters earlier this week.
Previous Lexus owners in Indonesia bought the premium cars through import agents.

Yeah, its a great move as there are already lots of Toyota Harriers in Jakarta (and other major cities). Toyota Harriers are sold through grey market dealers, so Lexus might as well enter through a legitimate dealership. The Harrier along with the Alphard are a status symbol in Indonesia...perhaps even more than some BMWs and Mercs.

Yeah $200K for the LS 460 L is high-roller cash for sure. But hey I'm sure the car stands out even more considering the more exclusive volume. And for those who buy hopefully it's worth it.

So they launch in Indonesia but Lexus has yet to launch officially in India?
Sometimes I just don't understand what the hell Toyota is thinking. There's a growing market for luxury vehicles in India and I'm sure Lexus would do very well...

They should and I expect will launch in India. Considering that they launched in China last year, and India is also a similarly huge economy and country.
We've heard about Malaysia and Indonesia recently, and it's important to point out that in both cases it is a single, multi-level dealership in the heart of the capital/largest city. When it comes to China, they opened a series of dealerships with plans for more. I imagine for India they also need more capitol and a more sophisticated plan for a network of dealerships, considering how large the country is. Last year also in Japan they opened up a hundred dealerships or so within August...

A lot of the big money in India is tied up in Mumbai and New Delhi, and those that can afford to buy a Lexus can also afford to make a trip to Mumbai or New Delhi to buy the car.
I don't know how many Lexuses there are running around India, but as of right now, the only choice is to import a used (Toyota version) from Japan, or export a new(er) one from a middle-eastern country.
