Mercedes working on new small-roadster ?
Posted on 05.6.2007
We have just reported about the SLR Roadster from Mercedes and there are rumors about a new small-roadster. Supposed to be called SLA, the new model will be based on the A-Class platform and will be unveiled sometime in 2011.
The next generation A and B-Class will be technically related to the C-Class. This means: front engines and rear propulsion. The same transmission from the C-Class will also be used in the A and B-Class. As a result there are rumors about a concept car with front engine and rear propulsion. Also the new roadster will feature a front wheel drive system.
More info about this project as soon as posible !

Why Mercedes, Why?? Isn't the SLK small enuff? I mean do they really need to compete for Miata sales? This is getting rediculous. What are they planning to make an SUV version of the Smart Car next? I pray Lexus doesn't follow them on this. I give props to MB for their great designs and popularizing the 4 door coupe segment but really.

It should be more of an SLK replacement. IMO this looks better than the SLK, albeit it is only a drawing. I agree though, they have too many models. I guess they are trying to sell a Benz to everyone who wants one in any and every demographic. Im sure even if they do make this car it will just be plagued with issues anyway, so if they MB wants to continue their slide downward then alright! This car should help that...

I would like to see al exus interpretation of an MR2 though... Z4/SLK competitor... only mid engined, faster, better handling and the usual Lexus perks

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, cause even though i'm not particularly fond of the SLK's shnazz, I find this rendering just plain ugly

My g/f almost bought an SLK350 and I had to look the other way everytime we were at the dealer and I only reluctantly test drove it but was worried the whole time about being seen in it.

Mercedes-Benz Vision SLA Concept
Posted on: May 7th, 2007
Mercedes-Benz will be using the same platform they used in the 2008 C-Class sedan for the next generation A-Class and B-Class, which means both will have rear-wheel-drive, higher performance and a more sporty chassis. Well according to AutoZeitung that same underpinning could spawn a sporty maller roadster in 2011 based on the Mercedes-Benz Vision SLA Concept which was inspired by the A-Class as well.
The Mercedes-Benz Vision SLA Concept used the same high-torque 1.9-liter engine of the A 190 which produces 125 hp. Front and rear axle of the roadster study were also derived from the A-Class.
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class also served as the model for the roadster study’s safety concept. In the event of a serious head-on collision, the oblique positioning of the drive unit ensures that - as with the A-Class - it slides below the vehicle, leaving the interior largely undamaged.
