So December 28, 2006, I fly into Chicago and drive home (Ohio) in an '04 LS430. The dealer gives me a 7 day Illinois "drive home" type tag because, as he put it, the car is going out of state. I explained to him that due to the holidays there's a great chance I'll not have the title sent to my Ohio bank lienholder and be able to legally register the car within 7 days. Not only because of the holidays, but because of the time it takes for the paperwork.
He told me "If you don't have it in time, I'll send you another 7 day permit".
Sure enough, I haven't heard from my bank and I call and they haven't received anything.
I call the Illinois dealer and explain that he needs to send out another temporary 7 day pass, which he does.
In the meantime I call my bank just about every day / every other day and ask if they've received my information so I can title the vehicle.
Last Wednesday (January 10th) my bank lady calls me and tells me she called the dealer in Chicago and they just now sent out the title. It's Tuesday January 16, and they still don't have it. I called the dealer in Chicago and they claim they may have sent it to the wrong branch (a Chicago one instead of Ohio).

Now, I have a car I'm so excited about but yet cannot drive it because of not having tags/registration. The Chicago dealer was PAID IN FULL for the car on 12/28.

What can I do here? What are the laws behind the time limit for transfer of title? Can I apply for a 30 day Illinois tag or something? Any ideas?

If you have a bill of sale, insurance card from your old car, and some kind of record of what is going on i really would not worry about.
