Default Toyota Working on Cheap Family Car

November 14th, 2006

According to the WSJ, Toyota is working on developing a cheap family car to compete with Renault’s Logan, a $7,000 car. Toyota is hoping that this vehicle will help it gain even more ground in competing markets where it is already scaring competitors GM and Ford on US ground. The car is expected to begin production in 2009 where it will be launched in China, Brazil and Thailand first. Toyota recently beat Ford as the world’s number two auto maker.

The Corolla is considered a midsized car in many countries. Think Yaris Sedan, but an even more stripped down version of it. And that'll be the $7,000 car the article is talking about.

When you put a motorcycle engine in a car's body, anything is possible...

They seem to be preparing to battle upcoming Chinese built cars that will be dirt cheap.

And yes, the Corolla actually isn't that "cheap" for many people.
There's a good size market below the Corolla class. The Corolla
averages about $15K out the door. Heck, I couldn't afford to buy
one right now.

I think it's probably more reasonable to buy a reliable used car (like a Camry for 7k) than a car that was designed to be cheap in the first place. But if Toyota can pull of a new $7k sedan with Toyota reliability then it's great.

If this thing sells well in China, maybe we'll see a $4k imitation version?

Actually Toyota already has a small cheap family car: Daihatsu Mira Gino.
It is a 659cc small car with 3 cyclinders(58hp). The base price is expected to be around $9000 usd if it is sold in the US.

In developing countries when cars are not everywhere, a 7k car is still quite expensive

Car should be something like Yaris Sedan, however much cheaper.

I doubt it will be sold in Western world.

While Yaris might look cheap to you, it is modernly engineered car with great brakes, 5 star crash rated body shell, modern VVTi engines, etc, etc.

When they say cheap, they probably think half of the price of Yaris... Due to customs and taxes, Corolla is almost luxury or is luxury car in most developing countries...

$7k is still too much. You know how many goats that buys in a poverty stricken country?

Looking at the goat to 'Yota ratio..........

Goat > 'Yota

7k is only expensive to those in developing countries. In developed countries, it is very cheap! In developing countries, people would not buy cars even it is 1k...
