Default New Nissan Skyline GTR run Nurburgring lap time of 7:58?

Called the GT-R, the new model was snapped by our spies at Germany's Nürburgring circuit. It was under*going high-speed testing that saw it break the eight-minute barrier for the first time, with a lap of seven minutes, 58 seconds.

Wearing only minor camouflage on the front end and tail, the model is virtually undisguised, and it's immediately obvious just how aggressive it is. Using sharp edges and angles, the stylists have evolved the current car's shape with a recognisable but futuristic design.

And from the low nose to the shark gill-like side air intakes and high rear - complete with its smart boot spoiler and twin circular tail-lights - the GT-R looks stunning. Detailing is beautiful, too, with NACA bonnet ducts and blacked-out A-pillars echoing a jet fighter cockpit. As Skyline enthusiasts will know, the looks aren't only for show. Under the skin, the GT-R packs an incredible punch; its specially built 480bhp 3.8-litre V6 engine features twin turbos tuned by motorsport expert Cosworth.

Keen to make the newcomer competitive with current supercars, as well as the forthcoming V10-powered Lexus LF-A, Nissan engineers have tweaked the V6 to provide boost from 2,000rpm all the way to the 6,000rpm red line.

Compared with the previous model's high-revving straight-six, the new powerplant is said to feel far more torquey, offering throttle response similar to that of a large V8. All this power is sent to the tarmac via a totally fresh four-wheel-drive system.

Details are sketchy, but the set-up won't feature a centre differential, and is likely to use a clever clutch instead. A new six or seven-speed gearbox with two pedals - similar to VW's DSG - will feature, as there will be no manual.

Set to get its official world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in a year's time, the GT-R could go on sale in the UK in 2008 with a price of around £50,000.

*Yawn*
The R33 GT-R Skyline clicked off a 7:59 in stock form, and the R34 GT-R did it in 7:45... so isn't this backward progress?

Besides...

C6 Z06- 70k
Skyline - 90-95k

C6 Z06 will have been out for 3 years by the time the skyline makes it out meaning it's competing with an older design and that much closer to a redesign

C6 Z06 Nurburgring lap time: 7:40... 18 seconds is a world of difference performance-wise, even on a track that long. If the Z06 was 18 seconds faster than it is it would be bar-none THE fastest standard production car to have run the coarse, besting the Porsche Carrera GT by 6 seconds, the Zonda F by 10 seconds, and the GT3 and Veyron by a full 17/18 seconds. That's a huge difference. Especially with the price and age of design considered.

Oh, and if you want to spend almost a hundred grand you might as well line the Skyline up with the bluedevil corvette which will likely be out not too long after the skyline w/ 650hp and even lighter than the Z06.

I can only imagine the track times it's going to be capable of!

Is there a site where they have the times for all test drives with lap times on that track?!

Thanks

I wonder if someone will ever test a Formula One race car on that track one day or atleast a Le Mans one, would be interesting too see the times.

Porsche Carrera GT: 7 mins 28 seconds
Bugatti Veyron: 7 mins 40 seconds
Nissan GTR: 7 mins 58 seconds

Thats amazing for the GTR. 18 seconds slower than the fastest road legal production car on the market too date. Only 30 seconds behind the CGT.

Sweet ride.

If I'm not mistaken, it was originally built as an F1 track, but closed to the sport because it was too dangerous.

The Z06's 7:40 I mentioned was witnessed by many but not done under valid procedures to make it an official time. In other words it was their best time but was not planned as being their best time.

So the 7:42 is the best official time.

Arent these numbers backward? From what Ive seen 70k is the price range the GT-R is supposed to find itself in. The Chevy dealer down the street from me has a USED C6 Z06 with ~7k miles on it for ~76K. I also know for a fact that my dad's co-worker didnt pay 70K for his Z06 either.

Also, am I blind or does the new GT-R's time not show up on 1SICK's data?

The base sticker price on the Z06 is 69 and change (plus tax and such of course)

If you include every last possible option including nav, the 1500 dollar upgraded wheel option and one of the 700 dollar special color options... 78k sticker price.

There are countless dealers now that guarentee MSRP or less on the Z06.

The ones showing MSRP + markup still today are looking for suckers.

7:58?? Thats it?!?!!?! Man, they hyped this thing up like it was gonna decimate all others. lol, not trying to take anything away from it though. In its defense, an under 8 second time is still highly respected. to them.

the car is still a year away. There's plenty of time for tuning and tweaks to crank up the performance before the car is released.

18 seconds is a long time at the ring. I managed an 8.59s when I went; which seems pretty decent, but at a full 40 seconds slower than the fastest run in the car I was in, it's actually not great at all.

yeah thats tru but they can only make so many changes----to jump 18 seconds will require some more heavy designing within the engine...possibly pushing back release date, so minor changes may be made, but if the time is authentic then i dont see it below a 7:5x even after changes
