2007 Volkswagen Passat R36 spied in testing
Volkswagen is currently testing the new high-performance Passat R 36 at the Nürburgring in Germany. A new round of photos show both sedan and wagon variants being put through the paces.
The R36 has larger air intakes up front, large alloy wheels (painted black for disguise), and a small spoiler and two exhaust pipes at the back. Power is expected to come from a 280 or 300 horsepower V6 engine coupled with a DSG gearbox. Recent reports have indicated the car will arrive in spring 2007.

Another answer to a question no one asked. This will be a $40,000 Passat surely. I mean, it is a "cool" idea, a hooked up OEM Passat but is there really a market for it? Though since it will have AWD, I now really question the FWD Acura TL-Type S.
I really miss the older Passat's styling and previous VWs in general. Outside the Golf/GTi/Rabbit clones, the new styling is very Korean/Japanese to me with a nice Audish grill.
HOWEVER,
As an enthusiast, glad to see VW giving people another option. It may sell poor but it will make a few people happy and it will answer the question for those that want a OEM hooked up Passat (VW enthusiasts) and I am all for that. Lord knows we can't get Toyota/Lexus to give us anykind of OEM true sport kit and I've held my breathe so long I'm blue in the face.

Volkswagen today unveiled the much-anticipated Passat R36 — a high performance variant of the popular sedan and wagon. The 296 horsepower R36 features a DSG transmission and 4Motion all-wheel-drive.
Zero to 62 mph takes 5.6 seconds for the sedan and 5.8 seconds for the wagon, thanks to a power 3.6 liter FSI engine. The cars have a top speed of 155 mph.
The R36 will be on display at the Essen Motor Show in Germany, taking place December 1 to 10.
