Price is pretty much the same as the RX350 AWD.

Also
The MDX has a real 3rd row (that folds flat)
Is car based (5' 2" wives can get in without climbing up).
Has a rear hatch/gate that can be opened with a car behind you (no station wagon door)
Gets better mileage
Is faster
Handles better
I sincerely doubt these two products are even cross-shopped.

Seems like an ok price. I dont think it has as big of a value advantage as the 1st gen, but its acceptable. Nice improvements, except for that hideous grill.

Uh, last time I looked GXs with the same features were $55K. I don't consider that just shy.

That's a bit of an exaggeration, wouldn't you say? The GX, based on the 4Runner, is a moderately capable SUV like the RX or MDX. If you were talking about the LX I would agree with you.

Agreed, plus, I'm not sure I've seen too many GX owners "thowing things at their truck" - like wading streams and traversing the Rubicon trail.

GX 470 was voted two time 4x4 of the year. That is a tough award to win as the editors take the SUV though off-road paces as well as vote on luxury refinements.
The GX and 4 runner do share platforms. The GX is known as the Toyota LandCruiser Prado overseas, where it is known as one of the most rugged and versitle SUVs on the planet.
Clearly most GX owners won't use it off-road but unlike every other SUV in its price range outside a Hummer, it can be taken offroad seriously.
MDX is RX competiton, not GX, IMO.
