There’s been a lot of speculation regarding a second SUV for Volvo, but we have the inside scoop! And on top of that, we have spoken to a Swedish insider involved in the project who revealed to us breaking news.
Volvo will be introducing a “concept” version of their newest utility vehicle this coming January at the NAIAS in Detroit, but the production version – to be called XC60 – won’t arrive until the second quarter of 2008 – allowing it to carry either the 2008 or 2009 model year designation. There was no misprint: though the name XC50 has been mentioned several times in the media, Volvo will be calling their new SUV the XC60 when the concept debuts in Detroit.
Codenamed Y278, the XC (Cross Country) 60 will carry over many styling features from the XC90, and will measure in slightly larger than Toyota’s new Rav4. It will share the new EUCD platform with the V70, and possibly engines from the S40 and V50, and bits and pieces with Land Rover’s Freelander, including the Haldex AWD system. Swedish? Sure. But we expect the upcoming XC60 to be built in Gent, Belgium!

Lexus will do well if they make sure that their cute-utes are functionally different than the competition. They've made headlines with the RXh, and perhaps they can make a different statement with other products.
I think Toyota/Lexus needs to put their efforts into other things than SUVs. They're heading in the right direction by focusing a little bit more on performance vehicles over SUVs.
We'll see real soon. Since all Lexus sedans have been updated, their next move is with their much-needed redesigned SUVs.

Early look: Volvo XC60 Concept revealed

Photos of Volvo's forthcoming XC60 Concept have leaked online. The vehicle will be on display at the Detroit auto show in January.
It's not known how closely the concept vehicle will resemble the production car, but if the Volvo C30 is any indication, the concept and production models will be very similar.
For the time being, details remain sparse and photo quality is poor. Nonetheless, we're sure Volvo fans will be interested in this early glimpse at what is certain to be a key product for the brand going forward.

Performance vehicles: 0
SUVs: 9
I agree, though, that it'd be nice to see some performance cars, rather than SUVs.

People want Porsches. People end up buying Toyotas. Toyota/Lexus know what people need (and people buy), and focus less on what people want (and magazines praise).
Hopefully, Lexus adds at least two performance vehicles (LF-A and 3genSC) to get praise from magazines as well as enthusiasts consumers...

Absolutely. This is one of the big reasons why Toyota is doing so well. Quietly building appliances that appeal to consumers' rational side, rather than their emotional side. Not a glamorous way to go about it, but an intelligent way.

In Detroit earlier this year Volvo showed us the concept version of the upcoming XC60, and now the first test mules are driving on secret test tracks in northern Scandinavia.
What looks like an ordinary Volvo XC70 with a ski box on holiday, is actually an shortened and raised mule for the XC60 . The bolt on rails with the ski box, simulate the higher weight distribution.
The Volvo XC60 Concept was the first Volvo to show us some of the new design language which is as boxy and boring as we are used to seeing from Volvo. Hopefully a lot of that new bold design by Volvo’s designer Steve Mattin will be visible when the XC60 hits the showrooms in late 2008.
In times where big SUVs are politically incorrect, it’s a right step for Volvo to be able to offer a smaller version. Also the success of the BMW X3, and the upcoming rivals from Mercedes and Audi, makes it impossible not to have a smaller SUV in the model line up.
The XC60 will be based on the Land Rover Freelander 2, meaning that it will have the 2,2 litre four-cylinder diesel from Land Rover/Ford, as well as Volvo’s own 3,2 litre straight six cylinder. Even the 2,5 litre five cylinder turbo engine with 220 bhp will be offered. Swedish transmission specialist Haldex will be responsible for the 4-wheel drive system.
The photos are showing the prototype mule and one computer image suggesting how the new XC 60 is supposed to look upon its release.
