Default GONE IN 3 SECS. - Superminis are no match for thieves

6 July 2006

By Karen Bale

SOME of the latest superminis can be broken into within three seconds, security experts warned yesterday.

That was the time it took Which? testers to get into a Citroen C1, a Peugeot 107 and a Toyota Aygo - each time without causing any damage to the vehicles.

With the best possible score for vehicle security set at 100, the three models got just 14 points each for preventing theft.

It also took just three seconds for the magazine's testers to get into a Kia Cerato LX, while it took them 18 seconds to get into a new Vauxhall Zafira.

The highest "theft from" score - meaning it was the hardest vehicle from which to steal something inside - went to the Audi A6 SE with a score of 85.

Of all the vehicles tested, the easiest to steal from was the Suzuki Liana GL, which scored just eight points.

The Lexus LS 430 had the highest "theft of" score of 88, meaning it was hardest to drive away.
The easiest to steal were the Hyundai Matrix and the Fiat Doblo, with 54 points each.

A Which? spokesman said: "Car crime is falling, say the Home Office. Yet thieves still attack 81 cars every hour. The fight is far from over.

"Thieves are getting more professional, too. The measures they'll take to steal a car, change its identity and sell i t on are more sophisticated than ever."

He said thieves were targeting portable satellite navigation systems because they are valuable, easy to steal and easy to sell.

He added: "Makers of these units need to adopt anti-theft measures, while car makers can still do much more to protect our cars and belongings."

People also need to start being a bit smarter, rather than spending $$$ on anti-theft measures.

Living in L.A., where people practically live in their cars, I pass sooo many cars that have laptop computers, iPods and cell phones, backpacks and briefcases, letters and bills with personal information, and the such just lying in full view on the passenger or rear seats. What's worse is that most of these cars have windows slightly open, or in some cases the sunroof fully open. Might as well keep the doors unlocked so thieves don't have to break a window while stealing their crap...
