World-Class Recall: Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Could Catch Fire
The 2005-'06 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is being recalled for a problem with high underhood temperatures.
Date posted: 06-20-2006
MONTVALE, N.J. — Mercedes-Benz is recalling its 2005 and 2006 SLR McLaren because high underhood temperatures could damage the alternator and start a fire, the automaker said.
Mercedes spokesman Rob Moran told Inside Line that the recall covers 433 vehicles in the United States as well as an undisclosed number of cars sold globally.
"Customers will be notified by mail, and the repairs will be done free of charge," Moran said. He added that there were no reports of injury related to the problem. The automaker will repair the car by improving engine compartment cooling and by installing a new alternator and a modified engine control unit.
An alternator affected by the problem will not provide enough power for the car's electrical systems. The display will indicate the need to shut down features such as the air conditioning and the radio. If the Battery/Alternator Stop Vehicle icon appears, the driver should shut off the engine and have the vehicle towed to the dealership for repairs, the company said. Moran said the company will not disclose what it will cost to repair the SLR McLaren.
What this means to you: Have that SLR McLaren checked out before you head to the track or try any fancy maneuvers.

yet another supercar with fatal flaws.... remember the Ford GT.... something about gas tank in danger of catching on fire, and something else in the suspension that was unsafe to the point where owners were not to drive the car under any circumstances until it was fixed. Funny thing is, the recall for the GT came out a month or two before Ford even said the fix would be available!
One thing that surprises me, for being so high maintenance, i never seem to see Ferrari recalls.

Mercedes Benz really screw up McLaren SLR. Catch a fire under on the hood. Mercedes Benz is careless a built supercar SLR. Fire! Run away from SLR. Big headache for McLaren Company. oh my god! Paris Hilton had a SLR her garage.

This car is ..... HOT!
I bet they get tired of hearing that and seeing it in their owners manual every 8 pages.
Mercedes has pulled an "Audi". Early 80's audi's had a similar problem of under hood fires related to oil rather than electrical, but electrical was also an issue.
I've decided that IF I buy a Mercedes, it'll be before the management change in the 90's. Hell, I'll rock a solid classic.
