Nissan Stops Sales of Altima, Sentra
It affects "only" the 4-cyl. Altimas and the SE-R Sentras. Risk of engine fire!
I'm not sure if they're going to do a recall, but they should. Even if the cars haven't exhibited problems, how the hell is an extended warranty going to stop engine fires?! Nissan North America is continuing its fine tradition of sucking. I wouldn't buy anything of theirs made on this continent.
That's all.

Nissan Stops Sale On Some 2006 Model Year Four-Cylinder Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs
Nissan Stops Sale On Some 2006 Model Year Four-Cylinder Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs [June 2, 06]
http://www.nissannews.com/corporate/...02120416.shtml
GARDENA, CA (June 2, 2006) – Nissan North America, Inc., today directed its dealers to stop selling certain 2006 model year, four-cylinder Altimas and Nissan Sentra SE-Rs because of reports of excessive oil consumption while it continues to investigate potential causes.
The condition, if not detected or addressed properly, could lead to the potential for engine damage, or failure which could result in a fire in extreme cases. The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration has been advised of Nissan’s action.
Nissan estimates that about 100,000 Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs built between January and May 2006 may be subject to excessive oil consumption. There have been about 215 reports of excessive oil consumption, mostly from rental-car fleets, and 17 reports of engine fires, resulting in one minor injury.
Nissan is aggressively working to find a definite cause and solution for the condition.
Nissan is advising owners of these vehicles that they should frequently check and maintain the engine oil level. If the engine oil level is kept at the proper level, there should be no engine damage and no risk of engine failure or a resulting fire. If the engine oil level is not registered at all on the dip stick, customers are urged to immediately add oil and bring their vehicle to a Nissan dealer.
In the interest of customer satisfaction, Nissan has extended the engine portion of the Powertrain Coverage of the vehicles’ warranty on Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs built during the January to May 2006 period to 84 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Nissan is taking these actions as part of its commitment to provide the highest levels of product quality and customer satisfaction.

Nissan Recalling Altima/Sentra
Thursday June 22, 12:10 pm ET

Nissan Recalling 97,000 Altima and Sentra Vehicles Following Reports of Fires
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nissan North America Inc. said Thursday it was recalling 97,000 Altima and Sentra vehicles after reports of excessive oil consumption and engine fires led the automaker to stop selling the vehicles.
Nissan said some 2006 sedans with 2.5 liter engines could quickly consume oil, potentially damaging the engine and leading to engine fires.
The automaker has received 274 reports of excessive oil consumption and 24 engine fires. Spokesman Fred Standish said there has been one report of a "very minor injury."
Nissan ordered dealers to stop selling the vehicles in early June after receiving the reports of excessive oil consumption and fires. The automaker is still trying to determine the root cause of the problem, Standish said.
The company said 85,000 of the recalled vehicles were in the United States, with others found in Canada, Mexico and the Middle East. The recalled vehicles were built from January to May this year.
Altima and Sentra vehicles built after May 22 "have been tested rigorously and have shown no signs of excessive oil consumption," Standish said. Vehicles built after that date are currently available for sale.
Nissan sent notices to owners and dealers about the problem and has recommended that owners check their oil every 700 miles, or about every two times they completely refill their gas tanks.
Standish said if the engine's oil level is kept at a proper level, it should not suffer any damage.
A date for the recall has not been announced. Owners can call Nissan at (800) 647-7261.

Not bad cars, not great cars...definitely bad interiors...although this has started changing with the later models.
I wonder if this will delay the release of the Versa, which I believe uses the same engine?

Nissan is not the worst, but in Mexico a lot of their low end vehicles that you do not see in the U.S., do pull their quality down. Toyota, as expected, is tops in quality here, but their prices are still out of reach for most.
