It depends on what you want and what is more important to you. Here are some suggestions:
Most room for least $$$: Scion xB.
Family car that you can pass on you your child when he/she turns 18: Toyota Camry.
When you want to send your child to an orphanage: IS350.
SUV for you, your wife, and kid: Infiniti FX.
SUV for you, your wife, and lotsa kids: Yukon Denali.
Minivan (upon complete automotive defeat): Honda Odyssey.
Sedan for your pampered child or wife: LS460L with Ultra Super-Duper Luxury and Supreme Bling package.
Divorce: Ferrari F430.
Divorce with alimony: Hyundai Accent.
I hope this helps...

Adding one child to the family doesn't really demand an SUV or minivan. A carseat fits quite nicely in the back of my GS, with room for three adults comfortably. Four can even squeeze in for short trips.
I think it's when you go to a two carseat family that a sedan becomes impractical.

thanks for the info. Im looking at the rav 4 highlander and the camry right now. I know one child doesnt demand a bigger car but ive been looking for something new.
Im planning on putting 10-15k on top of my sell value. and will definately be looking for the is350 coupe in the near future.

Go for the BMW 3-series instead of the IS if you are looking at that class. The 3 has much better space in the rear, and the door opening makes it easier to get the car seat in and out. Not sure if you are going to lease or buy, but Bimmer has pretty good lease rate.
I probably won't buy a RAV4. I don't think it has a rear bumper/shock absorber.
If you can get a good lease rate on the Quest, get it. Otherwise, don't think about it.
Make sure you get something with LATCH.

That's why I said to get another car if he wanted something sporty. I wasn't implying that the Quest was sporty by any means.
BTW, I love my recliner. I can go from awake to asleep in 3.5 seconds.

A safe SUV is an excellent choice against the sedan with the baby - and a coupe is a major hassle!
You don't get to choose when the baby gets sick, and depending on where you live the ability to get through snow and bad conditions gives a lot of piece of mind.
Rear doors, good height and not having to bend for the car seat can be a lot easier.
There's lots of stuff that go with a baby and then a child - now it is baby carriage, portable playpens and cribs, etc. Later will be sports and scouting projects (not to mention the team and the troop).
The liftup door on most SUVs gives you a great changing area in the back - complete with sun and rain shade!
