Record-Breaker: Around the World on 24 Tanks of Gas
LONDON — John and Helen Taylor have set a world record for fuel efficiency by traveling 18,467 miles on 24 tanks of gas on a 78-day trip that spanned 25 countries and four continents. They drove an unmodified Volkswagen Golf FSI 1.6 that averaged 52.1 mpg.
The Taylors' trip was sponsored by Shell. The couple attributed their much-improved gas mileage — the Golf 1.6 has an EPA fuel rating of 34.4 mpg — to the use of a new Shell gas formula that is available in Europe, as well as fuel-conservation tactics such as driving at reduced speeds. The trip began in London on January 17 and ended up there after trips through Europe, Asia, Australia and North America.
The Taylors hold about three dozen other fuel-economy records, including covering the greatest distance on a single tank of fuel: 1,459 miles.
What this means to you: Quit your job, buy a VW, go light on the gas pedal for three months and you too can be a world record-holder.

52 mpg on a stock VW?!?!?! Impressive.
I wonder what kind of milage I could get in my Sequoia using their tactics? Maybe I could get it up from 13 to 18 mpg. I can dream.

The probably have the record for pissing off the most people with their driving method. To get 52MPG, you gotta be going 40-50MPH?
Their record is definitely impressive. It's a nice change from the HUGE horsepower records we're used to hearing about in the news.

So what, I'm not impressed. he didn't touch down in Africa, South America or Antartica. So that record holds no weight with me. He doesn't get any stripes for that.
