Default Durango Does Dallas: Dodge Preps SUV for Hybrid System

DALLAS — Dodge says its restyled, sleeker 2007 Durango has been modified to accommodate a full hybrid system, which will be linked to the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine. The Durango Hybrid will hit showrooms in 2008, the company said.

In the meantime, Dodge unveiled the latest version of the Durango at the Dallas auto show with some 10 major improvements over 2006, including an electronic stability program, a tire-pressure monitoring system, ultrasonic rear park assist and a one-touch lane-change signal. The SUV also gets a redesigned fascia, grille, hood, headlamps, fenders and wheels.

Changes to the SUV's floor, second-row seats and electric system pave the way for the Durango Hybrid Electric Vehicle, which promises to provide up to 25 percent improved fuel economy. The two-mode hybrid system was co-developed by DaimlerChrysler, General Motors and BMW. The Durango will be the Chrysler Group's first production full hybrid system.

For 2007, Dodge offers an E85-compatible 4.7-liter flexible-fuel vehicle V8 engine in the Durango. This engine runs on E85 ethanol, gasoline, or any mixture of the two.

What this means to you: In a few years, hybrids will be everywhere.
