Default Cops issue tickets, pull people over for good driving

Tickets For Good Driving
March 9, 2006, 12:05 PM EST

Dozens of Central Texas drivers got pulled over Thursday for doing absolutely nothing wrong.

Travis County deputies kicked off what has become a controversial reward program.

You know that heart-stopping feeling you get when seeing the flashing red lights of law enforcement in the rear view mirror? Well, you won't see that if you're a good driver, but you may get pulled over.

Getting pulled over for doing nothing wrong may not sound right to a lot of people.

Travis County Deputy Derrick Taylor says his job is to not only look for bad drivers, but reward and encourage friendly drivers.

"The big cargo truck that was in front of you and you allowed to get in front of you, that was a very nice thing you did, and because it was a safe thing, we want to reward you with a Round Rock Express baseball tickets," Taylor tells a good driver.

Free baseball tickets for good drivers - some like it and don't mind being pulled over.

"I was really surprised, but it's cool though. I thought I was like in trouble so [it was] a little nerve-wracking," driver Erin Baker said.

Other drivers are saying it's an inconvenience.

Deputy Taylor says they're not trying to scare anyone. Deputies will simply wave to good drivers and politely ask them to pull over to the side.

"What I'm trying to focus on, and the only thing I'm trying to focus on, is rewarding someone for good driving. There are going to be some people who are not going to like it because the only experience they have with law enforcement is negative," Taylor said.

Drivers like Baker say they'll take this ticket over a traffic ticket any day.

"Yeah, I will probably go with my boyfriend or something," Baker said.

This program will last until this weekend, and it stems from one that worked well some 20 years ago, except back then, deputies were handing out money -- up to $50.

No one complained then until the money ran out.

I think taxpayers would appreciate if the cops spent their time catching bad guys instead of patting good guys on the back. Knock a point off my record, and we can talk.

I like to keep my contact with the 5-0 to a minimum thank you very much.

I'd PAY $50 to cops if they'd leave me alone and not pull me over. Sheesh.

That's a stupid idea. I guess, they don't have any better things to do.

And what happens if you get pulled over for nothing and the car smells like weed? or maybe he looks in the car and sees something he shouldn't, I say that program is bull**** if they want to reward people you can get an address from running the plates just MAIL the tickets

I think that's an abuse of power and may even be unconstitutional.

Just the sound of sirens behind me causes a mild heart attack in fear that I'm getting a ticket!

Leave me be if all is well...

This is typical of Austin ( Travis County ) ...at least the way I remember It. It is one of the friendliest places I have ever been. Even the cops seem to be nice.

Some good driver down in Texas may speed up when they see the cop waving at them and end up to be highway chasing...lol...

Totally agree

Dont be fooled.........they do it to check the people for smuggling drugs. They can now pull you over for this BS excuse just to check you out.

This has been a hot topic for some time. And they only do it in between counties, so they know your making a "road trip"

Kinda like that "Crack Tax" in Tenn that was posted a few months back.
its just a reversal to get around the Probable cause laws

I may be mistaken.....but those tickets to games........I think they're either free......or around $5

You are absolutely correct. I cant believe 20% of those polled would be thrilled ! ......Some people are soooo naive.... Personally I would be livid. ...Just reading this gets me irritated.
They either need to give cops the night off or have em start picking up trash on the side of the road if there is nothing better to do than this...
