Default GM Shifts Global Electronics Purchasing to China

DETROIT — General Motors reportedly has relocated its global electronics purchasing unit to Shanghai as the U.S.-based auto giant moves to source more components from China and the Asia-Pacific region.

GM previously had based the electronics purchasing unit in Warren, Michigan, where its other purchasing groups will remain, according to a story in Automotive News, the industry weekly.

China remains the largest and most profitable growth market for GM, in terms of vehicle sales. Much of the electronic components that it purchases in China are destined for GM products that are assembled in China, Korea and other Asian markets, the story said.

GM built 1.6 million vehicles in Asia in 2005, an increase of more than 20 percent from the previous year, according to Automotive News, which predicted the company's Asian plants will be outproducing its European factories before 2010.

Electronic components purchased from China and other Asian locations also will be shipped to GM plants around the world in increasing numbers.

What this means to you: The electronics in your 2009 Chevy Camaro will likely come from China. But there might still be a GM by then because of deals like this.

Sad, but true.
