Zetsche: Smart likely to come stateside
DaimlerChrysler boss Dieter Zetsche told Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper that his company is seriously considering bringing the Smart brand to the United States. The report, which was published today and cited by AFX News, suggested a final decision will come during the first half of 2006. "Currently it is more likely that we reach a decision in favour of the US (launch) rather than against," Zetsche said. He said the company is "leaving no stone unturned" when it comes to making Smart profitable again. Recently, DaimlerChrysler sold the rights to the discontinued Smart roadster to British consortium Project Kimber.

Oh we have SMART down here in Mexico. In fact, I can see the dealer right out my apartment window. They originally came to Mexico like a gray market import, as did Alfa Romeos (later GM picked them up) and now Mercedes sells them at all their dealerships. The main advantage to these small vehicles is the great gas mileage, however the power output of these vehicles is hideous. They drive like little electric go carts (have friends with them).

Some people would appreciate Smarts. Though not many. Especially those tree huggers (no offense).
What we really need from them is some more diesel models from Mercedes. We only get the E320 CDI, dammit!

You have to see one of these cars in person, whether it be the one shown, the roadster or the SMARTFOUR. These cars are small, underpowered (great MPG though) and I worry about what would happen in a crash. The roadster I sometimes mistake for a new Lotus at night.

There are only 5 states that don't allow the E320 CDI. If they wanted to, they could bring the ML320 CDI, but I don't know why. Do you know how many people are dying for one here?

We have these in Canada and it seems a lot of people like them as city commuter cars. They are TINY!!!
Although the structure is extremely strong, I still would be afraid to drive this vehicle. Imagine getting t-boned by a Tahoe in one of these things? The structure may stay in tact but the forces against the person inside would be extreme. The car would also probably bounce back a great distance with high chances of rolling.
