I bought a cheap 96 Volvo 850 Turbo at an auction on Friday and have been driving it all weekend... that car is SO much fun. I expected just to resell it for profit and thought I'd hate driving it... but it's so fast and sleeper style. When just driving down the street the car is so quiet, and then just giving it half throttle makes the car sound like such a beast with the turbo spooling and bypass valve. It feels like it's easily a mid 14 second car... it actually feels a lot faster than my 13.3 sec AWD dsm from a roll though.

So... now thinking of keeping it and modding it... does anyone know how much power these cars are capable of? I'm also looking at the C70 coupe as a possible car in the future... it's just as fast, lighter, and looks sweet... while still being built in Sweeden.

hahaha....yeah...those 850 Turbos were quick for its time. Resonably quick. I believe the 850's were rated at around 220 -230hp. But what made them so enjoyable was the loud turbo spool. You can clearly hear the turbo spool up. The older Volvo's will always be my favorite. They all sound so mean. Even the exhaust was kinda throaty. 13.3??!! Nawh, not that quick stock. About a second and a half slower. IPD makes some quality stuff for Volvos. They usually have ECU upgrades and intake and exhaust bolt ons. Ive seen 850's with more than 350hp. I believe someone had one in the 450 range if I recall correctly. But dont forget that the 850 is FWD.

The C70 is cool. Outside of the new R's, they were probably modded the most. Wide body kits and all.

Yep, the C70 is a 2 door... the 850 I just bought to resell, but now I'm seriously considering getting a C70.



I knew the 850 wasn't a 13 sec car... but it would smoke my old TSi from a roll... off the line the TSi would get it though. (AWD) I'm not sure what it is about this car... I mean I've owned 5 turbo cars, and this one I think is underrated from the factory. Comparing it to my other cars, I'd have to guess a 14.8 or so. From a 60mph roll the thing is just CRAZY, and 60' isn't as bad as I thought it would be at all... not very much spinning. I can't wait to take it to the track and see what it can do. Other websites have said back in the day nobody thought much of them, but they smoke Mustang GTs, Camaros, etc etc. So... I'm off to find some stock V8's.. haha.

yeah, i know exactly what u talking about, the 850 is quite impressive. my buddy has one, the exterior he made it into the BTCC touring style with graphics, CF hood and all sorts of fun stuff on it. if u go to jsjbrothers.com, go to gallery, find SF japantown, go to the 3 page and u will see his car on the bottom right.

those 850's had killer factory stereos in them too, if I recall correctly.

I have a friend at the track with a Chevy (modernized version of the Chevette) and he installed a turbo from an S60 into it and now hands defeats to SRT-4s.
