Default Z06 Vette "Blue Devil" does the ring in 7.40

http://www.imageark.net/image.php?id=122345

The new 2006 Corvette Z06 did a 7.40 at the Ring. The only Porsche wich can lap the Ring quicker than the new Corvette Z06 is the Carrera GT, at $400,000.00 more.

For the Porsche 911 series to lose its traditional leadership as the fastest serial production car at the ring is rather shocking.

For comparisons sake here are some other official Ring times.

These are from www.supercars.net. www.nurburgring.de also posts times going back to the 1930's.

FYI, most experts now believe that it was the regular Z06 that did 7:40, not the blue devil. GM is supposed to announce the actual Z06 lap time the week of July 25 2005.

i posted this on aw, here were some responses

"For one, the time was set by GM. That meant they hired a professional driver, closed the track, and ran the car for days straight tweaking and trying to get the best time.

The other times are by independent sources which show up with a very limited time schedule. They have the same driver run the cars at a fast pace...not an insanity pace. They run it once and call it a day.

Lastly, the blue devil is a $100k beast which no one knows if it will even make production or not.

Here are some other times for reference...once again, from independent sources.

When the next generation of 997 GT2, GT3 RS, and Ferrari F430 are tested...I am very confident they will better or meet that time." - Verrückt
"Verrückt is totally correct. Besides, the times you cite are off. I have witnessed a 7:28 by an X5, but as with the Z06 in your note, it was far from stock (1000hp+).

An f3000 champion and porsche head test driver I know got a 7:22 out of a CGT on street tires and a 7:16 on race tires. He also got a 7:38 out of a GT2 and a 7:44 out of a gutted, but stock, 997 on race slicks.

On a track 14+ miles long, 3-10 seconds can be made up by the weather alone (humidity, track temp, ambient, etc).

Porsche has been given "special" slicks to get some of the numbers above and there is no doubt GM has the same situation.

Manthey Racing develops all of the GM cars at the Ring (they are the winningest porsche supercup car team and developed the CTS line, C5 and a portion of the XLR before the booted it for being, well, an undevelop-able hunk of junk.

Just in comparison to the known bench marks, that Z06 has to have a better power to weight ration and stickier tires than cars with a known HP to weight ration of 5.4 LBS/per 1HP.

I will bet ANYONE that is not going to be near the case in the street car, period.

As a matter of fact, I will bet it will not break 7:48 on street tires (on the best day possible), period which is an average speed of about 108 mph.

Just my thoughts. But after 10 years and 3000 miles of driving and photographing test cars run the Ring, I have a pretty good idea of what Ring times are "real".

Not sure why this is news(No offense to RA40). An AC-Schnitzer M3 CLS II E36 with only 350 hp is roughly 4 sec faster with a slightly faster kilometer per hour. It's as fast as the $400,000 Porsche GT in good weather. The Vette only manage to match the GT while it was on a wet coarse.

Impressive numbers from the vette!!

By the way, that list is a bit dated.
The fastest production vehicle around the ring is a Donkervoort at the moment.
7:19 if I am correct.

Great number for a sub-$100K stock auto on the ring

I got to hand it to the new vette...it is looking very tempting.

They really need to market that car a lot better over here.

I agree, I'm sick of people bashing American cars when they excel at what they're supposed to do.

"Oh, well yeah you're car may be fast in a straight line but it's nothing on the twistys"
"Um, well actually GM has a car on the Ring running 7:40, so...yeah"
"Psh, that's just a one-off model, it'll never make production"
"Ok, well how about the Corvette that's running under 8 minutes...that's faster than a GT3, Diablo, 997, 360 Modena, and the Maranello"
"Well I don't care it doesn't have the prestige of the other cars"
"It's not supposed to. It's supposed to be an afforbable American car that'll beat some of the top cars for a small fraction of the price. And if you don't like that, how about the Mosler using the "dated" LS6 running 7:42? That's got the GT2, Murcielago, and XJ220 beat, and about 2 seconds behind the SLR McLaren."

It's crap when I hear these responses. Give credit where credit is due. I extend that to all cars on that list regardless of where they're from.

Just because the E36 CLSII is extremely fast doesn't discount all the other cars on the list, or make them slow. Since the Vette "only" did it in 7:40, does that make the Pagani Zonda slow too? How about the Koenigsegg CCR, or the GT3RS? Please, explain to me how these cars are so impressive at the track while this C6 (whichever version) is laggine behind by only keeping pace with a CGT on a wet course.

Pretty much all the cars on the list is great IMO. But since since many tuner and manufacturers seems obsess at getting the best time at this particular track, not every great vehicle can win. So we must give credit where it's due and hype the vehicle that has pulled the best time considering it's HP. In this case, the E36 CLSII's got it all over the others more powerful and expensive ride IMO. That ZO6 Vette is basically a 3sec slower version of the E36 CLSII. While almost 4 sec slower than the M3, it still beat out many many more powerful and expensive vehicles. Vette's time is very very impressive, but M3 is more considering it's got almost a 150hp/150ft lb disadvantage.
