Rosslyn Plant

BMW’s South African plant in Rosslyn (near Pretoria) builds more than 40,000 BMW 3 Series a year, many of which are exported to the USA, Japan, Australia, Africa and the Middle East. Initially conceived as a CKD plant for assembling kits, the Rosslyn Plant completed expansion in 1998, becoming a fully-fledged car production plant firmly integrated within the Group’s production network. Receiving the international ISO 14001 Ecology Certificate in 1999, Rosslyn now guarantees that all BMW Group plants not only offer the highest standard of quality, but also comply in full with the strictest environmental requirements.

I didn't know that. Clearly the Z3/4 and X5 are made in Spartanburg, S.C but I guess according to a VIN number some 3s here are not made in Germany.

shouldn't the customers be told where their cars are made?

I'd be pretty pissed off if my Lexus was made anywhere else than Japan.

If the VIN dosnet start with a 'W' then the final assembly was not done in Germany.

I always wondered what the BMW dealer here in Charlotte ment when they showed "South African" on some of their 3 series inventory. Now I know.. .

I thought this was better known. Most of the time it's the lesser models (325) that are made at Rosslyn. The coupes (and M3) are still of German origin. Don't be fooled by the origin - Rosslyn 325s have sometimes better average quality scores than German origin 325s. I think a lot of the production is also dedicated to RHD cars.
