Toyota Announces Record March Sales in Europe

Toyota achieved absolute record European sales in March, with 107,839 units delivered, up 2%
compared to March 2004. Meanwhile, Toyota’s first quarter sales fell slightly by 1% to 258,016 units, in an overall market down 3.3%. Lexus sales in March fell 6% to 3,148 units, while first quarter sales for the luxury brand fell 14% to 5,739 units. Toyota’s March market share was up 0.3% to 5.4%. In the first quarter, Toyota produced 157,504 cars, 132,999 engines and 60,854 transmissions at its plants in the U.K., France, Turkey and Poland. For 2005, Toyota has set the target of selling 980,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Europe.
In addition to setting an absolute monthly sales record in March, Toyota also achieved absolute record sales for the Corolla (23,872 units; +3%); Corolla Verso (9,926 units, +174%); Land Cruiser (4,729 units; +9%); and Prius (1,718 units; +110%). In March, the U.K. was Toyota’s largest national market in Europe, achieving an absolute monthly sales record with 25,842 units sold (+2%), followed by Germany (16,024 units; +23%), Italy (12,630 units; -9%),
France (8,580 units; +7%) and Spain (5,359 units; -4%). Meanwhile, the Czech Republic enjoyed the most spectacular growth (+105%), selling 774 units.
