Could a BMW M5's oil change really be $250
just reading a BMw website
guy had traded his M5 in for a M3
and member asked him if an oil change was like $400
someone had this to say :
I'm sure it's 10w/60, just like in the M3 (although I could be wrong). The quarts are about $12-15 a piece depending on what dealer you go to. Add that to the price of the filter and the fee charged by the dealer, and I can't see it being any more than $250.00 ......worse case scenario. My M3 oil changes usually run about $130-140 between scheduled intervals.
here's the thread

just couldnt believe it would cost this much

But can the oil be that much different from say a Mobil 1 Synthetic? I mean a 10-60 is mainly only about the temp the oil is the most viscous right? How could they be gettting $10-15 a quart unless they are just tacking on their own "luxury tax".

I agree with the fact that BMW oil changes cost more than your avg oil change. My father's 740iL oil is changed by the dealership whenever the oil change warning shows up on the instrument gauge cluster computer (I think every 7500 miles?). He tells me he gets the oil changed only at the dealership, using their own oil and filter, and costs between $100-$150 per change. I'm guessing it must be very complicated to change your own oil on a BMW

One thing that complicates matters on a Bimmer oil change...even non-M's.... is that they don't just have the typical simple screw-on filter you can pick up at an auto parts store. It fits inside a special metal housing, usually at the front on the upper side of the engine. Beyond that, I don't know a lot of the details....I've never actually done a BMW oil change myself like I have with many other cars.
If you are unsatified with the dealer prices, (and I sure would be at $250), try Olympic Auto Parts, if they operate in your area...or check their website. www.olyparts.com They carry a good line of foreign auto parts and may have all or part of what you need at lower prices.

by my understanding when i used to work at the dealership is that the BMW oil was speciffically made for BMW by Mobil1. thats just my understanding of the situation, i could be wrong though. But i know for sure that Mobil1 makes the oil for the Porsches... they can go 15-20k miles on one service, but if you keep going past that, be prepared to buy a new engine...

the M engines take a special Castrol Racing oil, much like how the Enzo can only use Shell Helix 10W-60.

Service centers are big business. I think it's all marketing and bs. VW tells their owners you can't get coolant anywhere else and it costs $15/gallon. I think BMW is pulling the same manuever here.
