FYI, according to the Mercedes Benz Germany site. The E55 sells for Euro90,422
E500 elegance Euro61K.
E500 avante Garde Euro62K
The >40 % appreciation of the Euro against the US$ in the past 2 years(from 0.80-85 ~ 2 years ago to 1.20-1.25 recently) makes European prices of Mercedes look really expensive to Americans today.
Also, base E class in Europe can have different specs. from it's US counterpart.
For example, E class can be ordered with cloth seats in Europe whereas only leather seats are available in the U.S.

i dont like the back all that much... id much rather have an E55... but because of overall quality and reliability i would probably choose the M5 or M6

A little off topic, but what is an E55 like?
I drove a black 2003 E500, and after driving it, just realized how great of a car my 98 GS4 really was. The power was the same as the GS4, but my GS was smoother, roomier and I was quite surprised that the side panels on the car looked a bit cheap compared to my Lexus. Similar material is found on the Nissan Altima
Not dissing MB, but I was sorely disappointed in the E500 compared to my 6 year old Lex.
