Default Why is The Chevrolet SSR so Slow?!?

I was wondering on why the SSR Truck has such sorry performace numbers. At First - when the truck came out - i didn't really like it - now its growing on me but the performance is blah..0-60 mph in only 7.6sec thats really slow for a Truck with 300HP and weighs 4700 pounds. I mean my '03 Toyota 4-runner is a V8 with 235 HP and My 0-60 mph time is 7.6 Secs and the 4-runner weighs 5500 pounds a whopping 800 more pounds.. Actually My 4-runner is faster than that cause last week - I lined up with a buddy of mine with an '04 IS300 and my 4 Runner actually took him by half a car length.. According to the IS300 numbers 0-60 should be in the low 7's and if my 4-runner can take it - it sure will blow that SSR concept truck out of the water.. I like the SSR in its design and features but performance is a disgrace and it cost over $40,000.

But still doesn't make sense why its so freakin slow -?
I can hear the chevy jokes coming...

I was at the annual auto show two years ago. The GM Rep was on stage showing off this Pontiac concept vehicle and announced it has a great supercharged 260 HP V6 This is a future vehicle for GM and it only has a supercharged engine that makes only 260HP?

Problem with the GM upper management?

Its sad for GM cause we got non-aspirated V6's in Nissan putting out 260-287HP and Acura V6's putting out 260-270Hp's.. Imagine a Supercharger on these Engines -

I think doemestic companies need to start thinking out of the "Best Buck Theory" because These simple Japanses companies are outrunning them with a better more reliable car with more power for the same money if not just alittle more, but wouldn't you pay 3-4K more for better car ? anyways I am real disppointed in GM and domestic companies except for the new '05 Corvette.

Very good point. Toyota is also getting more exposure from racing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. It is just a matter of time before Toyota will lead in selling its truck/SUV like the Camry unless our domestic brands match Toyota's quality and reliability.

I was rading an article in Hot Rod Magazine on the Best V8s in the world and although most were American the magazine said they were gonna do a breakdown of hp/L and tq/L numbers but it was pointless because the US got whooped in everything except for most total torque. A lesson in effieciency seems to be in order for American car makers cuz its getting pretty sad.

O.L.T. : I saw the same TV show - and it look good on the track - but it did not mention any numbers- I wonder why?
I saw Motor Trend TV and the O-60 was near 8 secs.. (7.8) though a lot of test have confirm a range between 7.4 to 7.8 which on avg. it does it in 7.6 secs.

Their Efficency is horrible! - I say whats the point anymore when your dealing with domestic cars - are people that gullable?!?

Default Why is the SSR slow?

Two things here. First, the SSR was NOT designed for drag racing or tight slalom courses, any more than the vehicle it was based on....the TrailBlazer. Like the Plymouth Prowler and the new Thunderbird, it was designed primarily for cruising, with the added ability to carry a small-to-moderate load in the bed. It is a HEAVY truck body-on-frame design just like the TrailBlazer and uses many of the same underpinnings. In fact, with its comparably high center of gravity, too much performance can be a detriment and can lead to rollovers.....a concern also when driving the Ford Lightning and the Dodge Ram V-10.

If you want burnouts and quick 0-60 times, for what an SSR costs, you can take the same amount of money and get an entry-level Corvette or a new GTO.....vehicles that are DESIGNED for it.

1) It's extremely heavy.
2) It only comes with a slushbox and I think (although I could easily be wrong) that slushbox only has 4 speeds as opposed to the more common 5 (or in some instances 6) that many modern cars offer today
3) Chevy missed the ball. If they think people will plunk down that kind of coin for a car that is only good to be seen in and not have fun driving, they're high. I bet the SSR will be just like the Blackwood and Thunderturd. It'll sell well for a short while but then languish on lots.
