Please provide some input on Canadian Province breakdown- enabling classified feature
Hi all,
I'm enabling a forum feature that will make it easier for our members to identify ans search on regional sales in our classifieds. The CL forum software lets me define a preset 'prefix' that goes in front of the thread title and a pick list to choose from.
I've set up all the two digit US state abbreviations ("NY", "CA" etc) and want to make sure the Canadian provinces are represented and easy for you guys to find and search on.
A little googling gives me the list below:
Alberta AB
British Columbia BC
Manitoba MB
New Brunswick NB
Newfoundland and Labrador NL
Northwest Territories NT
Nova Scotia NS
Nunavut NU
Ontario ON
Prince Edward Island PE
Quebec QC
Saskatchewan SK
Yukon YT
My questions for you:
1) Should I just list them all individually since there is no overlap with US state abbreviations? All you'd see is the two digit value from the dropdown list - not the full name.
2) Should I expand the code definition to group them better (examples "CN-NS" and "CN-AB")
3) Should I just list "CN" for all Canada provinces since it will be easiest for you to search on this value and make transactions/trades within Canada?
4) Should I use some other geographic breakdown like "CN-East" and "CN-West" (your input here if you like this option).
Please post up with your feedback; hopefully this will be very helpful for you all. I'm leaning towards 2 or 3, but would like your thoughts please.

1) please dont mix them with any of the US states, maybe like a section below it?
2) same as above
3) how about all the province and territories plus a general CN, if people can't find what they want in their own province?
4)I have seen other fourms split into 1. West (mainly BC), 2. Ontario, and 3. East
with 1 and 2 is where majority of this forum uers is coming from.
hope this help

FMJ,
Thanks for the feedback. So which (or new alternative) do you recommend? Sounds like you might be suggesting the following:
CN
CN - West
CN - Ontario
CN - East
If you guys are having difficulty visualizing what I'm talking about, bimmerforums has this setup in their classifieds for US states - you can see some of the FS items tagged with the state code prefix before the title:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...play.php?f=215
edit - they appear to be down at the moment, but check back... they don't have anything for Canada specifically though, just "International" as an option.

dave, are there a lot of canadian CL members posting items for sale? if there isn't, you could just have 2 main categories - west and east. all provinces west of manitoba would be lumped under western canada, and all provinces east of saskatchewan would be lumped under eastern canada. and if you want, you could have a 3rd category for nw territory/nunavut/yukon.
i would only break it down by indivdual province if there is a large amount of posting that warrants it. 2 cents

I'd guess probably 100-150 items per month, maybe more. It's more than you'd think across all the models.

Hacked CL to become a Mod
I vote for west and east, none of us really buy a lot from other Canadians on the forum anyways so no need to go ***** out and most of us are either in Vancouver, or Toronto with a few scattered in between

west and east is enough
not enuf old lexus in each province to make it active enough
or west, east, quebec (for the french speaking people)
also canada should be CA, not CN

I also think just an East/West split is fine. I also think maybe spelling out Canada makes more sense than using "CN" (I don't know anyone who refers to ourselves as "CN").
It's basically going to be Vancouver using West and Toronto using East

I like either CAN -follow by 2 letter province.
Other wise the west -Ontario and east works as well.
Now if i was alerted to any threads using that header it would be real nice.
CAN for canada works well also . Besides their is the CN tower. I know stands for the Canadian National railway.

Should I consider something like
CAN-Vancouver
CAN-Toronto or CAN-GTA
CAN-Other
SK, don't think the alerts are that smart, BUT you can search for it now very easily if people use it. Probably could find a way to automate that search string.

dave, three regions are fine: canada west, canada east, and nw territory/nunavut/yukon
if you want to create a subforum for each model, that would be cool as well.
classified - for sale: canada section
1. canada west
a. GS
b. LS
c. IS & IS-F
d. SC, etc, etc
2. canada east
3. nw territory/yukon/nunavut
your thoughts?
