Dash Lights Went Out

2002 LS430 - Driving home last night, the dash lamps (spedo/trip/gas/tach) went dark with the headlamps on (headlamp indicators OK)...turn the head lamps off and the dash lamps came back on. Any position takes the dash lamps dark, OFF is the only position that has the dash lamps on....goofy, what could it be?
