Did some work over the weekend and here we go.

Done for the night!

Awaiting gasket kit from ebay. Also need to get the 10mm bi-hex socket so I can remove the head tomorrow.

Are we done yet ? Just kidding. I love watching build threads like these whose work is being done by the owner themselves. Saves a lot of money and you see the dedication and passion of the owner. At the end of the day , when something goes wrong with your car , you know exactly what to look at and do. You get to know the ins and outs of how your car runs. Not everyone can do that and that is what makes the build enjoyable and rewarding.

Keep it up !!!

Thanks for checking in and thanks for the support! I'm enjoying the process and trying to soak as much knowledge up as possible.

Made some additional progress w/ the help of a couple friends.

Headless! This is the original SC300 block w/ 240k+ miles. Rings appear to be in pretty good shape for the miles.

Here's the original head. Taking this to check on a truing block (I think that's what it's called) to see how much work needs to be done.

It is coming along. The head doesn't look that bad. Hard to tell from that angle. Get the machine shop to deck it and install new seals and what not. Should be good to go after that.

Default Head Gasket Decisions

I'd like to achieve a 9:1 compression ratio and from what I've read here (see bottom of first post) http://www.supraforums.com/forum/sho...fferences.PICS with my current GE combustion chamber, head gasket and the GTE pistons (which are installed in my new block), I'll achieve 9.03:1 compression, which is right on the number. Agree / Disagree?

If the above is a go, is the replacement head gasket that's coming w/ the kit I ordered ok, or do I need to get the OEM one? I'm still looking to be built for up to 800 RWHP too...

That's good to hear. Hopefully this can be turned around by this time next week. This build is taking a life of it's own.

Quick Update!

In the middle of learning about blueprinting engines and rebuilding this head.

From what I've gathered so far, I need to do the following:

Gasflow Port & Polish Head - Using guidelines from the service manual and the link below
AUDI RS Forum - Gasflow Port & Polish Head - Megapost w/ pics

1 - Reseat the values using the valve grinding compound and lapping tool
1.1 - Re-shim valves???
2 - Depending on how the head looks, get it resurfaced
3 - Blueprint engine to ensure everything is within spec
4 - Hydro Test Head
4 - Reassemble head w/ camshafts, ARP studs etc

I'm sure i'm missing something feel free to chime in

These kinds of builds and owner dedication is what I love about CL. Im new to the 2J and rear wheel drive world so being able to get all this real world insight is so much help. I was going to buy a 2JZgte engine swap but im going to build my NA 2J. I just need to keep reading on my manual trans to see if it can handle a built motor or if I can build it up a little. Sweet build man I will be following every step.
