You need an x pipe in that exhaust system! I have 2.25" all the way back from the headers with no cats/resonators and stock mufflers with an x pipe. A little loud but I think it sounds awesome. Couldn't beat the price of $300 for a custom exhaust. I have a sound clip on instagram if your interested in hearing what it sounds like (acorcoran27).

So I was down at the shop last Monday checking out the car and going over some fitment issues with the exhaust, and we decided to change from a dual y-pipe setup to an x-pipe design utilizing a dual-in dual-out muffler that has an internal x-pipe. We also will not be using the two rear silencers, and are using offset rear mufflers instead of straight through style. The angles the exhaust would need to get around the rear suspension and still meet the straight-through mufflers would create a restriction of its own. Stupid me was too bedazzled to remember to take pictures. I will try to get the shop to take some undercarriage shots of the finished setup. I remember being very surprised at how close the IMF headers hug the engine block. I'm very glad I had them ceramic coated! I don't need any hoses melting on me.

As of now, the car is just waiting on the rest of the exhaust parts to come in the mail, and my rebuilt ECU to come back from Driftmotion. Can't wait to have her back!

Hoping to hear an exhaust clip soon! The headers should change the sound a good bit but you're still keeping cats in the mix which will help keep it from being too raspy & loud. I too have a 92 SC400 with a W58 (done by previous owner) and I had the exhaust modified a few weeks ago. I kept the two stock cats, replaced the third cat with an X pipe (2.25" piping, I believe), left the factory resonators in place, and removed the rear mufflers and utilized 3.5" tips out back. I don't get any drone whatsoever inside and I think it has a nice tone from outside, although I've yet to hear it except a slight rev while parked.

I still have the stock 3.91 gears and she also sits at about 3K RPM in 5th at 70MPH. If you're doing similar RPM's with the 3.76 rear it almost seems it isn't worth doing just for the sake of RPM's, but the LSD would be nice. Also, what shifter are you using? Is it a shifter assembly straight from TRD? I have the stock SC300 shifter and it doesn't feel very precise, feels more like I'm churning melted butter so I'm hoping for a more "sport" like feel.

Sounds like a nice setup. Planning on adding headers to the mix? A manual transmission SC400 is one of my favorite car setups. They're my favorite builds to read about.

It's close to 3k, I'd say 2800-2900 rpm depending on if I'm going up or downhill. I'll definitely be putting in the 3.26 final drive ratio I bought as soon as I can.

I have the entire short shifter kit from TRD, and all of the instructions were in Japanese . It has plenty of feedback, is very tight (as in, no loose play in the shifter), and shifts very crisp, but I attribute that more to the marlin crawler shifter seat and socket. I highly recommend those marlin crawler shifter parts. Other than that, it seems like an R154 would suit you better.

Yeah sound clips?! I've heard a 300 with Borla mufflers and I decided that route before I got mine. Let's see if the Pro xs are what I've been longing for.
