Would also change out the cam seals and distributor o ring. Timing belt tensioner is a good idea as well

Should I also replace the timing belt idler pulley? It looks good in my opinion.

Haven't had much time lately so things slowed down a bit.
but there's some progress to report! haha

Head is out!
Oil pan is off

Now seeing the head gasket I'm more inclined to reuse it. I'm not planning on building this block so if it's not necessary why change it?

The brackets are extremely simple and not really necessary IMO but here it goes.
hope it helps

Next thing to do is to clean everything. Ohh boy..

If its good you don't have to. Just depends on if and if you mind taking off your timing belt to change it if it goes bad.

Sorry for the long wait
helped my parents move and got a new job so I've been a little busy

Started on the engine clean up
Decided I am NOT going NA-T on this engine, my buddy is holding a GTE with a getrag for me for a good price, not to mention I still need to get the tranny parts for this swap.

Cleaned the pistons
I was a little concerned about that last piston being a different colour, I thought maybe that piston was running lean or it had been changed?

Got most of the head clean before I pull the valve stem seals
and finally took my exhaust manifold and shifter to get welded, should get rid of that annoying exhaust leak.

Tried out removing the valve springs with a C clamp and a PVC pipe worked fine just have to be careful
pics on that later

Again sorry for the long wait
The new job is taking up lots of time

Anyway the pcv pipe works but its pretty difficult to use
after about to keepers removed I decided to just buy the tool
Its $64 or so from snap on

Oddly enough the tool is also too big to remove the keepers
but it works great to put the keepers back which is what i was having trouble with

Heres a pic of the old valve stem seals

It is coming along quite nicely. I remember like it was yesterday when I was wrenching on my first turbo build.

With the valve stem seals installed it was time to put the head back.

I decided to go with arp head studs and a tt headgasket just in case

got the head on, camshafts and gears went back. Had to clean those camshaft caps! Waterpump and timing belt next.

Got some goodies in for the swap..

got a 13 lb chrome moly flywheel from xtd clutch for real cheap
did a little research and their clutches are iffy but the flywheel is good.

got the vehicle speed sensor along with the clutch pedal assembly, clutch master cylinder and some other miscellaneous items.

everything is going back on the engine!

and keeping me company are my two dogs Leo and Niko

Ohh gosh.
Tried to mate the gearbox to the engine.
Turns out the bell housing was for the 7m.
The guy i picked up the r154 from swore it had the 1jz bell housing and i didn't bother to check.

Ohh well.
Sourced a 1jz bell housing and got those mated.

More updates soon. I'm committed to get this car done asap

Very nice build! So you're not going GTE and V160 just yet?

I have a question, since you're about to install your R154: it sounds like it's from an MKIII given that you had to replace the bellhousing. Does the tailshaft on yours work with the W58 SC/MK4 mount or only the MKIII Supra R154 mount? If it's the latter, what crossmember solution are you planning to use? I ask because I'm getting ready to swap an MKIII R154 into my car very soon as well.

Haha yeah the gte and v160 are gonna to wait a bit.

I ended up having the tailshaft that only works with the mk3 mount.
So i just made the holes slightly bigger to fit the pattern of the mk3 mount and got longer bolts, washers, lock washers and spacers.

the downside to this is it makes the gearbox sit a bit higher so take that into consideration when you either make the hole on the tunnel or modify the shifter.
