Hello,
So i just picked up an 1993 sc300 about 2 weeks ago and i decided I would make a thread to document the build. Ill be making a dd/ drift car.
its a mostly stock 5 speed with about 185k miles, runs really well though
its got some later model (IS i think) wheels.
its got a new sound system with an alpine head unit and a sub

cons: it needs new belts and pulleys, i think, i can head a squeaking type of sound, i think its the alternator belt, or some belt

need to fix the back of the headliner and the side above the drivers side

and i need to fix the passenger side door handle/lock. you can only open in from the outside with the key turned

i havent taken any pictures but here are two that my friend owen took of me yesterday

my upcoming plans are:
sprint supra lowering springs
buy a welded diff in the pumpkin
get some wheels with 225's and probably sell this wheel setup (255's square)
and more stuff down the road

Don't weld your diff if you're going to dd it at all.. Fork out the cash and get an lsd! If you were going to strictly track the car I'd say weld it

Yeh welding would not be very good on turns....

yeah, thats what ive heard from a lot of people. some people who daily one say it takes getting used to, and other people say dont do it at all. I was going to buy a welded in a pumpkin to use it for a while and see how it feels, and I can always have the stock as a back up. but im considering just trying to buy a 2 way. Im not sure at this point to be honest, but thanks for all of the imput. Id love to hear from people with a welded diff (both ups and downs to it)

just did some more drifting tonight and the car feels decent even with the stock open diff.

anyways, I have a sound that the car makes sometimes when you hit the brakes, sounds like the suspension. its not rattling like a pillow ball mount or something, its more like an occasionally clunk when I am going slowly and hit the brakes to come to a complete stop. actually, now that i think of it, it happens more when im driving in reverse and the stopping.

also, im going to be doing a lot of suspension work in the near future, and I am planning on putting in new pillow ball mounts, because its an old car and i have a feeling that the bearings are getting old/ maybe seized. i was wondering if anybody uses camber plates. i dont really see them on sc300's, and Im not even sure if they make them, but it looks like ones from an old mk3 supra would fit. what would the benefits be? and why dont people use them?

edit- did some research and camber is not adjusted at the strut towers on sc's, causing camber plates to be useless

so about that wierd clunking noise, i think it might be the brakes, or one of the calipers. it sounds like something is loose.

heres the situation:
I can put in in reverse, get going around 7 or so mph, put it into neutral, and while coasting, i can to a quick brake tap (on and off the brakes of half second max) and when i do that i will hear this noise, and then i can tap the brakes and get the same result. i could do it 5 times in a row when coasting backwards going 7 mph and i can hear it every time

has anyone had this problem before? im going to take off the wheels and check to see if any of the calipers are loose or something

i went to the san jose south "pick and pull" yesterday, (theyre basically a chain of salvage yards in the bay area) and i spend a good few hours in the rain pulling a 4.27 diff in the pumpkin out of a 1992 sc400. it wasnt too bad of a job, i just lacked a 10mm and 12mm allen wrench for the axle mounts and the rubber mounts on the back. Anyways, i took all the hardware and bushings too, and now I have that as a backup so Im going to go ahead and find someone who can weld my stock 4.08 diff. I have a 110v wall outlet welder, which I would not trust with for this job, so I think I will take it to someone to weld.

Ill get some pics up when Im taking out the factory diff and doing that work.

And my door hasnt been working, it only opened from the outside with the key turned. so I decided to pull the door panel today. the little plastic lock button was broken, but with the door panel off, everything works pulling the cables by hand... weird.

Thanks! its really pretty awesome. only bad thing is everyone assumes that lexus=automatic so on those steep hills when people pull up right on your tail at the stoplight, well, it can be a little bit annoying. anyways, i took a pumpkin with the diff in it from the pick and pull, it was off a 1992 sc400 (3.92), from what I understand.

Anyways, Im going to get one diff welded and keep the other one as a backup. Im planning on welding the 4.08 thats in the car, but I cant decide. I dont care about gas milage, id rather just have performance gains from it.
So for drifting, 4.08 or 3.92?

I got a differential off of a 1992 auto sc400 as a backup about 3 weeks ago from the pick and pull in san jose. It took a little while, but it wasnt too bad.

I took it out to clean it and decided to take some pics
the bushings are in ok shape and the flex disk seems pretty solid

Anyways, I was about to start taking the diff out of my car tonight, but I didnt get past step 1, hacking the car up. I tried a few different places to put the jack and stands and I came to the conclusion to put the jack under the diff and the stands under the spot in the picture. it seems like a pretty solid/thick place to put them.

I started a thread for this to confirm, because everywhere else that people were telling me wasnt working too well.
