Default Aluminum wheels and Polishing...

Wow.....

Never knew this could get so addicting

Got a set of 3piece wheels sitting at home, currently taken apart. I would like to accomplish two things, polish the lips to a mirror finish, and the barrels as close to it as possible.

Must say I am HOOKED. Been browsing detailing sites like auto geek and adams for hours now and would like some feedback from some of the experts out there. I am new to all this.

Any tips for precleaning the wheels before polishing?
What metal polish are you guys using? heard great things about adam's metal polish #1 & #2...
Any specific towels or applicator pads?

Any help is appreciated!

Today I did one lip and here are the results... however I know I can do better, all I did to clean the lip beforehand was warm water and a microfiber towel and wiped them down..

This was using Mothers and the yellow powerball, though it looks great in pictures I know it can look better

The setup

One part of the wheel (did by hand)

before

after

And the rest of the wheel (did it with the power ball)

before

after

Yes I know the results look good and like I did a hell of a job but if I had a better camera you would see why I am out here asking for help.

So from this you did not sand the lips at all? I am in the same boat as you right now trying to refinish my lips but hand buffing is a pain in the !@#. I am thinking of wet sanding with 2000 grit then polishing up. Currently using Blue Magic polish

Do you know if your lips are clear coated?

For the above results I used the mother metal polish by hand and wiped with a microfiber. However also had the same results as you, its called Micro-marring (fine thin scratches like the picture below). Ive been learning a little. Turns out mothers METAL is actually a very aggresive polish and should never be used on wheels. Something like Mother's BILLET polish would work better because it is a finer grain.

I am waiting for the kit from the link below to arrive, everyone over on the detailing forums told me I wouldnt go wrong and it would get rid of the fine scratches. I'll report back with my results.

If you are going to be polishing your lips here some advice I was given:

1. Wash the lips with DAWN BLUE ORIGINAL soap.
2. Use a detailing clay bar and actually clay the lips, you can use water but better with quick detailer. (This step is only if you want them to come out EXTRA clean will still look good without it though)
3. After you've washed them good and clayed them, make sure you dry them well with a microfiber.
4. Start your polishing.

5. (optional) use something like zoop seal to seal the lips. It keeps them clean for about 6 months.

Thanks man. I recently picked up the wheels and they just need a good cleaning.

Yeah pretty sure the lips aren't coated because when I buff with the blue magic the black oxidation appears on my towels haha.

As promised to TMF2004, here is my quick review of Adams polish #1 & #2....... Throw away everything else you have ever used RIGHT NOW.

Wow, Wow, Wow. The best $19.99 I have ever spent on a metal polisher hands down friend. By hand using adams, I was able to remove imperfections that other metal polishes weren't able to remove even with a power drill. Simply amazing.

I'll be honest, I take back everything I've ever said about what I thought were "overpriced" detail items. This polish really made me a believer and I will most definitely be using Adams from now on. BTW I have no affiliation with them nor their products.

Just curious as to where u bought that kit for $19.99... The website says $34.95 just for the 4oz bottles...

I'm eager to try this now based on your results.. Nice to hear all this was done by hand and not a machine...

I also just bought Adam's Revive Polish to try out

thanks

It's 19.99 for the 4oz set, I didn't want to spend $34 on the 16oz and be disappointed.
Even the 4oz bottles seem like they last forever depending on use.
