I use Autosol and put the metal polish on the steel wool before taking it to the exhaust. That is for one that doesn't have a steel wool mixed in like the Meguiars or Mothers tins

Best and fastest way to clean even the nastiest exhaust is to use steel wool combined with metal polish. If it's REALLY bad, you can use 00 or 000 steel wool with metal polish at first and follow up with #0000 steel wool as that will give it more gloss. After that you can maintain the exhaust tips with metal polish wit ha MF pad or a foam applicator once a month or so.

Steel wool maybe a bit to rough on the exhaust and cause some deep scratches that would require a lot of polishing to remove.

Here's what I used to clean up soot/gunk/whatever off polished parts.

You can get it in 3 different grits (coarse, medium, and fine), and it will be less damaging than steel wool.

I see that sandpaper causing more damage than anything. The description of it states: "For removing dust, paint, and scale from metal surfaces"

Besides, the person who uses the wrong wool, metal polish, and a lot of pressure deserves to have those scratches. The wool is merely a helper since the metal polish should be doing the most work. In my experience, light pressure is enough to remove most materials
