Default Pics Before and After Wet Sanding Headlights

Hello CL, haven't posted for a while. It was a beautiful day today in Sac, CA so I decided to wetsand my Headlights and wash/wax the GS today.

I just used 1000/1500/2000 grit sand paper from Pepboys and Meguiars Plast X. Foam Applicator and a few micro fiber towels, the front right didn't get as much TLC cause I found my grove while I did the second set on the front left.

It looks alot better after i threw some wax on there to give it a smooth glass finish, but don't have pics of that. Let me know what you guys think.

And heres just a pic after all said and done =D

Sure did, bout a 45 minute job. I just sanded up and down throughout the light then go side to side all throughout. a few times with each grit. worked well. took about 3 to 4 passes with the Plastx to get it clearer. Only problem now is i think there wasmoisture build up inside the dome over time that needs to be cleaned but not sure if i wanna bake my headlight..

yea looks like it still has some sanding marks which is causing the haze.

after you use the sandpaper you're suppose to you some 3m rubbing compound. then you go over that with plast x. then top with a wax. your lights arent clear and still have a slight haze to them. Also make sure you are wet sanding. spraying the light often with a soapy water mix.

Exclamation

Wax alone won't prevent them from hazing over again. You need to apply a clear coat over them or they will eventually haze up. If you do clear, make sure you tape off EVERYTHING!! You do not want overspray on the car from this, since it will be in an area everyone sees.

ahh thanks for the tip. I only wet sanded them to get the pits and scrataches off of the lights. I usually apply plastx every 3rd or 4th wash. I'll eventually want to upgrade them to HID's and get the lenses clear bra'd. So if they break they break =D. Gives me an excuse to ask my wife to get a new set of lights ^^.

is this the only way to stop hazing to come back? are we talking a clear coat for paint?

In the long term, yes. Keep in mind that the plastic has been scuffed and buffed and any sealer on the lenses has been removed by doing so. A shot of clear over the lenses will re-seal them and prevent the hazing from reforming immediately, but keep in mind that the contaminants and driving will still affect them. Putting a good sealant over the top of a layer of clear will help things slide off - dirt, dust, mud, bugguts, etc. These all lead to hazy lights because they rub the lenses pretty much constantly. S'why many bikers will clean their visors on their helmets and wax/seal them when they get them. Anything to stave off the eventual is a good thing.
