DIY: Polished Lip? Curb Rash? FIX IT NOW!
NOTE: This will ONLY work if your wheels have a polished aluminum lip.
Alright, here is a quick and easy way to fix your curbed wheels. Please attempt this repair at your own risk as i will not be held accountable if your wheels come out more damaged then they were originally.
Well, the unfortunate happened the night of the 2010 BOS meet, i curbed my beautiful Work VS-XX's
. First thing that came to mind after i heard the sound of my wheel hitting the curb, you know what i mean, i said to myself, " Damn, thats gonna be at least $100 to repair" lol. Then I remembered going to a local car meet where a guy came out and repaired peoples wheels on site with a compressor and his wheel repair kit, pretty much a grinding gun and different sanding discs. he repaired painted wheels, color matched and everything, and provided awesome service. Anyhow, i decided later that night that imma attempt this with a dremel so here i am.
This repair took me about 30-35 mins for each wheel. I did the repair while the wheels are on the car so you can decide what you wanna do. They came out real nice but if you were to put your face about 6 inches away from the spot i did the repair, you MIGHT see where the repair was done. After driving around and parking her, i looked at the wheels and honestly have no idea where the repair is now. So if you really wanna detail the lip, then just take more time.
Items needed:
1. WHEELS THAT HAVE AN ALUMINUM POLISHED LIP
2. Dremel tool - NEED to have a Dremel tool with VARIABLE speed settings.
3. Dremel Accessory kit # 697-06 - Good to have cause its only like $20 at Walmart. But all you really need are these:
- #952 CONE shaped Aluminum Oxide Grinding Stone
- #413 Sanding Discs 240 GRIT
4. Steel Wool - SUPER fine grit
5. Sand paper 400 grit, 1500 grit and 2000 grit (not pictured but one 4''x4'' sheet of each will do, depending on how big your rash is. i only used like a 2''x2'' for both wheels)
6. Aluminum wheel polish - I used Meguiar's but Mothers will work too.
7. Microfiber clothes - any will do but yellow costco ones are cheap
Lets get crakin'
Step 1:
Damaged wheel
- DREMEL was used on the LOWEST SETTING - i believe its 5000rpm
- Take the first dremel attachment #952 CONE shaped Aluminum Oxide Grinding Stone
and grind down the burrs the best you can, doesnt have to be completely smooth just rounded the best you can.
- Change attachments to the #413 Sanding discs and now try to round it out even more.
and it should look like this
Step 2:
Now its time to do the fine detailing of the lip. Take your sand paper and start sanding by hand starting with 400 then 1500 and then 2000. After you are happy with the outcome, hit it with the steel wool rubbing back and forth, it'll start to shine. You can always go back with the sanding disc if it looks like the lip isnt rounded enough to your liking. Should look something similar to this with very fine hair line scratches.
Step 3:
Take your microfiber cloth and aluminum wheel polish and go to town. I just did it by hand since i re-polished the whole lip already with the PowerCone, highly recommended product!
Outcome: you be the judge
Looks pretty easy right? i think it was. Overall, i think it was a lot easier than i anticipated. Just take your time and you'll be surprised when you're all done and saved a few hundred bucks for other mods for your whip
