Default Porter cable question...

Is this the orbital polisher i need? I want the 7424 model, but this one says "SANDER". Is it just a matter of changing the backing plate out? if so Im gonna scoop it up!

EDIT: oops, forgot link

I was looking on Ebay as well for a PC myself, as I would like to pick one up this season. I checked your link. It states 7424, I too would assume it's for polishing/waxing. I wouldn't imagine it makes a difference that he listed it as a sander. I'd bid on it myself, but I'm leaning towards a g110 as it doesn't stop when you apply extra pressure. My understanding is the 7424 does stop with the added pressure.

Yes, the P/Cable 7424 is originally a sander, that had been used by detailers for awhile, before more people discovered it. You can sand with it too, but it makes a great detailing tool.
I think that if you have to lean on it hard enough to stop the motor, you are doing something wrong anyway..
There are so many variables, the aggressiveness of the polish, etc, and the pad, are the biggies that come to mind.
I think leaning on any buffer too long will cause too much heat and that can damage clear coats or paint in general..
Good luck with your purchase !!

Neither the PC nor the G110 will stop the motor with pressure. They both rotate and oscillate. Too much pressure will stop the rotation of either. Too much pressure, as in excessive. For the tool to operate effectively the pad must both rotate and oscillate. With either you adjust your pressure accordingly. The G110 does have slightly more power but with that also it seems to have a higher failure rate. Also consider the UDM.

That said, I'm not sure I'd buy a used 7224 for $60 when they were frequently available for under $100 new. These tools require periodic maintenance to insure their longevity. If the maintenance was not done you might be buying a pile of junk.

Porter-Cable has recommended regular lubrication and periodic brush replacement. This service can typically be done by many local ACE hardware stores as many are authorized PC repair centers.

The UDM is made by PC, BTW.

personally i love my PC7424..and yes if you put to much pressure on it the PAD stops spinning/oscillating but doesn't stop running(i think thats what was being said a few posts above me) but with the right pad/polish combinations you shouldn't have to apply that much pressure..

As others have mentioned, the 7424 is a fantastic detailing tool for anyone. Very easy to use and makes polishing and applying waxes much quicker.
If you pick up the machine, heres a link to a backing plate and some pads, everything you need to get started.

Is there any REAL difference between the PC and the UDM?? I keep reading people using that as an alternative. Whats the difference between 2? Cosmetic? Internals? Same manufacturer but different Marketing names?

Same thing now. PC makes them for UDM, although that wasnt always the case. You wouldnt be wrong to purchase either one now though.

I've read that they are not exactly the same. The UDM has slightly more power and draws more current. The speeds are different (faster) as well. Yet they are more alike than they are different.
