Tutorial: DIY "Black Pearl" style Emblems

really works
This hobby paint really emulates the black chrome. I got the full emblem black chrome from Sewell and put it on my GS Sport. I didn't like the chrome fake exhaust at the bottom of the rear valance but hardly wanted to spend the money to do much with these phony "tips" so I bought a can of that hobby paint at a local hobby shop and sprayed the chrome ends while barely masking the surrounding area to prevent overspray. It really worked! It has been several weeks now and it matches the black chrome perfectly at a grand cost of about $7. No peeling, no bubbling, just a nice look. I have to thank the OP for finding this nice match.

Base coat you just need 2-3 TOPS. 2 should be plenty as long as you get the whole thing covered. 4 layers of clear is also overkill. The more paint you put on it, the chittier it starts looking. Put the last coat of clear on thick and it should be as smooth as automotive paint even if you are using a rattle can.
Same thing goes for Plastidip and other rubber coatings. Just like paint, you can either make the result super grainy by shooting light coats from far away, or get it looking extremely smooth by shooting closer and heavier coats. Yes more risk of a run, but if you're careful it should not be an issue at all.

Duplicolor Shadow Chrome?
Digging up a super old thread here but I’m trying to do my emblems on my GX. I’m tired of the ugly plastidip. Has anyone used Duplicolor Shadow Chrome spray paint instead of this Tamiya paint? Is it essentially the same thing? Also for those of you who used this tamiya paint on your plastic grilles, how have they held up?
