Doh! So much for the poll.

After owning several black cars, I use a new sponge EVERY time I wash my car. I never re-use sponges, rags, wax applicators, etc. The car is happier that way

Is saving $3-5 worth the swirl marks?

Man, you need to go to one of those Meguiar's classes they hold on Saturdays in Irvine. It's AWESOME - even though I don't have any swirl marks yet, you learn how to KEEP it that way. Well worth the time - so much so that I fully plan on going again!

Anyway, I now wash my car (per Meguiar's) with two buckets (one for soap, one for rinse), both of which have GritGuards at the bottom to prevent the dirt and grit from being put back on the car during the wash.

I use a sheepskin wash mitt. I find that they are less likely to create swirls than a sponge.

We talked about that at the class on Saturday, too. Mike (the instructor) said he likes to use sheepskin mitts, but the guys at Meguiar's who detail executive management's cars (i.e. Barry Meguiar's Ford GT and others, all of which are black) swear by their sponges. He made arguments for both materials, and concluded that it was really up to personal preference.

I use a genuine wool mitt with the 2 bucket method: 1 with just water to rinse the dirt out of the mitt and one with soapy water to lather it back up. Rinse the mitt out often and change one or both buckets often.

When the car is very dirty, I'll make one very light pass on each side of the mitt, rinse, lather, then use a little more pressure on the same part of the car. This will help with the swirls. Take your time and put your effort here now or you'll have to take your time and effort (or $) later polishing it up.

Start on the top of the car (it's usually less dirty on the top, hood, and trunk than the sides of the car) and use straight front to back strokes and use up and down strokes on the sides of the car.

Rinse car, microfiber sponge with Turle Wax Zip Wash, wash each section twice, and finish off with Nanowax and absorber.

I use a soft brush to wash away the bugs at the front end first. Then drive to a local car wash to finish off.

1. Water the car
2. Spray soap to the car one section at a time using foam gun
3. use Meguiar washing mitt to wash the area
4. Rinse the washed area with filtrated water
5. Repeat step 2-4 for a spotless shine without water spot*

*No drying necessary
