I'm in the SF Bay Area and looking to purchase a GS350, but the dealers in the area only have 1-2 in stock. These are huge volume dealers that sell 200-300 cars per month, and I see dozens on RX's and IS's lined up on the lot.
Why would there be a shortage of GS350's right now?
There are still quite a few left (as of 12/28/2006) at Magnussen's Lexus in Fremont Auto Mall, CA where I purchased mine one week ago... A beatiful black on black GS350.
From what I was told is Lexus slowed up GS production to help get rid of the 06's. The problem is there's about a 3 month lag from when they do something to when it hits us. That sounds about right, why cars are in short supply. My dealer said things should be ok by mid Jan

They slowed down production of '07 to get rid off of '06?!? I haven't seen any *new* '06 GS for a very long time. BTW, I noticed the same at our dealership, a couple month ago they had tons of GS350s, now hardly any. I wonder if a lot of people wait for December-to-Remember, and it will take a short while to replenish the stock?
We're waiting for one which should be here between late Jan and mid Feb. Lexus has just not been making enough of them, in part, supposedly, because of the introduction of the LS. Out here in the Northeast there are definitely quite a few base cars (no Nav/no ML) and only a handful of cars with Nav/no ML. The Nav/ML combo is the toughest to come by right now in this area.

Magnussen's only had 2 when I was there this past weekend, a Pearl and a Smoky Granite. I really have my sights set on an Obsidian or Mercury with Ash interior.
A friend of mine down in SoCal heard from his dealer that Lexus decided to make more RX's, ES's, etc and less GS's for the holiday season. Maybe Lexus' plants are capacity constrained, and they have to make trade-offs based on what models sell better during the holidays.
If supply is supposed to be back up by mid-January, I'll probably sit on my hands for a couple of weeks before making a purchase.
I would have bought one but the trunk would not hold my regulation set of golf clubs which I brought to check trunk size. Before the test drive my salesman assured me Lexus would never make a car that would not hold a set of golf clubs but Lexus has built one now. In addition to being small the trunk is poorly designed laterally on the floor as well as the expected loss in its front from the batteries. I guess they were not interested in golfers or anyone who takes a weekend trip when they designed the 450h!
When you say regulation set of clubs I guess you really mean a full sized tour bag with all the goodies?

They might not have the Smoky Granite any more, since I saw a brand new one with a Magnussen's plate drive past me in downtown Walnut Creek this afternoon.
Christmas is the season when husbands buy RX's for their soccer mom wives, so I'm sure you're right - Lexus held up GS production for the season. Glad I got mine as soon as they came out, even if I overpaid a little...
