What do you think of the offseason moves so far?

Juan Pierre, from what I can tell, is a younger version of Lofton. Is this really an upgrade, or did they waste their money on this one? Tough question. Yes, Pierre is younger and faster, but how long will his speed hold up? In the field I would say that he and Lofton are about equal, while Pierre is holding the edge in terms of baserunning speed.

Jason Schmidt looks like a solid signing. Kind of puzzling that the didn't really go hard after Zito, but from the reports Schmidt should be a reliable starter. Hope his shoulder and back hold up...

-Bringing back Nomar was a no-brainer after JD Drew left (good riddance).
-Signing Lieberthal was interesting since they now have three catchers on the roster
-Gonzo could be good. Maybe he'll show the Diamondbacks that he isn't finished yet since they dumped him.

Sucks to see Gagne probably leaving, even though he's been hurt these past two years. Can't beat the Game Over whenever he came in...

Thoughts?

pretty good so far... everything points toward incremental improvements.
now need a big bat (if possible w/o losing the farm)
as for losing maddux and gagne(?), maddux will be missed and it's tough that he signed w/ a local rival, too.... as for gagne, it's really hard to tell what you're going to get....??? maybe money better spend elsewhere, but he'll be missed.

gagne isn't as hard to say goodbye to. they offered him quite a bit, given that he's been hurt. 4 guaranteed up to 10 mil with incentives.

maddux is getting a bit old. 5-6 innings or 85ish pitches a game. the thing we'll miss most about losing maddux is the lack of "veteran knowledge" or whatever that he might bring to the clubhouse.

in terms of getting a big bat, most likely seems like vernon wells is the only rumor left around. that would most likely include brad penny, a young guy, and possibly toby hall as a throw in. the question then would be, who would you rather lose: andre ethier or matt kemp? (better now, or possibly a future 300/30/100 guy?)
