Shooting with the BIG GUN... 17MP!
Hello all!
Have had Canons Big Gun (the 16.7!) for a little over a week now doing model shoots, fashion shoots, scenic and wildlife photography. To say that the files are large would be an understatement. A compressed RAW file is around 15 to 18 megs, while a fully expanded TIFF file, 16 bit/channel, is right in the neighborhood of 100 megs. OUCH. 13x19's are SMALL to this file size. Canons recommendation is right around 24x36, even larger with interpolation of their large format printers.
Image quality? This thing beats out all of my Mamiya 7 medium format 100 ASA slide film, hands down. With the slide film, I can still pick out the grain. With the Canon 16.7mp, not a chance.
Camera handling? Just like the larger sized EOS 1 series. 4 frames per second doesn't sound like much compared to the higher speed sibling, but it's a definite improvement over the older 11.1 mp model. Throw a CF card at the Big Gun, but be sure it's 80x OR BETTER as the camera takes every advantage of the speed.
The last shoot with the camera...sneaking up on a Great Blue Huron. Big Gun with the 300 2.8L w/2x, 600 mm at f/5.6 THIS IS NOT CROPPED. I was a bit over 40 feet away from this bird...for those that know the Great Blue, they are HIGHLY HIGHLY skittish. Approach them from 200 feet away and they bolt like crazy. Pretty much every stealth/sneak technique in the book to get this close. Well worth it. ISO 1600, 1/100th sec, carbon fiber tripod.

Can't post the model shoots...they'd be banned for sure! Put it this way...the person I was photographing would make the HIN models/Texas Bikini Team look BAD by comparison.

The rig...
The Big Gun, 300 2.8L EF lens, Bogen 3047 head, Gitzo CF1325 Carbon fiber pod. About 15k worth of gear sitting here...and that's without the memory card price (4 gig Extreme III) and the 2xII extender.
For those that are looking into Carbon Fiber tripods, they are worth every penny. Expensive, yes. But if you're hauling gear, every pound saved while hauling big glass helps. And for their weight, they are SUPREMELY stable!!! A 4 pound tripod capable of supporting up to 26.5 pounds. Amazing.

This very same view got highly jealous looks from another nature photog shooter. He had original D70 with a manual focus 300 2.8 ED.
Having nearly 17 megapixels is NICE, and rivals, in some cases, beats out medium format film. I didn't even look at the guy...but I could see out of the corner of my eye that he just dropped a big one looking at The Rig (TM).
Next up...the 500 f/4 L IS lens. Saving up for one of these bad boys. The AF is a lifesaver in those "quick draw" situations. Would rather use my telescope, but in some cases, the speed is essential and would sacrifice some image quality for it.

With all that zoom are you sure you're a model photographer and not a member of the papparazzi?

Nice. Feel the same as you. Had been shooting 645 until last month when I picked up a 5D. Amazing image quality and the graduations are excellent. I'm not completely accustomed to some of the softness at the corners but it's a characteristic that works. Similar to the leaf shutter lenses and the 1/2-1 stop difference at the corners.
I'm renting lenses till I find one that suits my needs, so far the 24-70/2.8 has given me very nice results.
