Default Slingbox

Does anyone own or know about a product called Slingbox from Slingmedia? I have seen and read a few things about it that if you hook it up to your cable, satelite box connection you can watch tv whereever you are on your pc or laptop if you have a internet connection. Are you able to have someone watch TV on your home system but watch different programs while using your laptop with the slingbox or does the digital cable box have to be on the same channel you are using for viewing on the slingbox? I may be interested in getting this if I can watch cable TV on my laptop in another state and have it hooked up to our digital cable in Alabama that has several movie channels. Not sure if this is possible with this device.

I once read a really good write up on the SlingBox online somewhere. A Google search should come up with something. Im pretty sure it will do what you are saying.

There is also something similar called Honest. It's just software.
Honest's MyIP-TV Anywhere

The SlingBox is not a tuner. It just grabs video from the source and streams it to the remote connection. Control is via an IR sender that you put in front of the source. If someone is watching at home, they will get a surprise when you start interacting with the cablebox.

Sorry, I fixed the link up there. But to quote the article:

"It's similar to the SlingBox, but it's a entirely software version.
The software must be installed both on the home PC as well as the remote device, such as a laptop. Buying the software includes registration to the Honest service and IP-TV web site. Once logged into the service and site, the software tunnels through the Internet into the home PC, accessing the video feed and transcoding it into an H.264 MPEG-4 format. The package also includes a USB video capture box for those customers who do not own a PC with a tuner card."

One of my father's friends here in Mexico City has that system. It hooks up to his place in Connecticut whereby he can watch DirecTV USA, since a satellite system hooked up down here misses a lot of channels being so far south (actually Dish Network works 100% fine down here). Slingbox has a huge following down here in Mexico as a lot of expats in Guadalajara have been using them hooked up to one of their children's extra boxes in the U.S. and they in turn know people in other locations in the world who have done the same with a friend or family member hooked up back in the U.S.

As long as you have high speed Internet, the picture comes in just fine with no delay.

The place where I live has an aerial rights issue with my putting up a dish on top, so I am also going to get a slingbox one I get the highspeed Internet installed here.
