HELP: Almost got effed over with a chargeback scam
Here is what happened. A couple days ago, someone off ebay purchased my 1900 dollar item. The buyer has 20+ feedbacks and has been a member since 2003. He paid promptly with a CONFIRMED PayPal address. Everything went smoothly until tonight at 11 p.m. when I got an email saying that the buyer initiated a chargeback.
According to PayPal, the buyer said that the reason for the feedback was "unauthorized". At first, I thought that the buyer was going to accuse me of sending something defective. Interestingly, I checked my Fedex account and the shipment was to be delivered tommorow morning. Luckily, I immediately called Fedex to stop the delivery and they did. Now my PayPal acount is negative 400 dollars because of this @$$#oLe.
I have heard of many horror stories about how PayPal screws over both buyers and sellers. Does anyone here have any experience with such chargeback scams? What is odd to me is that this chargeback scam involves an nyu.edu email address and the shipping address is confirmed.

maybe you can email paypal and provide them with the status of the item and how the buyer was trying to scam you?

Paypal is junk. I only use it for small items. It's just too risky these days.
Anybody can get screwed by paypal.

Ok guys, here are some updates. I instructed Fedex as of 11pm last night to halt the delivery due to fraud and they agreed. I checked MyFedex this morning they attempted to deliver it and it was refused by the recipient.
This led me to believe that the buyer changed his decision at the last minute. This makes sense because it would be hard for him to commit a scam using confirmed billing address on a signature confirmed shipment. Basically, my lost in this transaction is 2x the shipping cost which is 23 dollars each way
I contacted PayPal this morning and provided the information such as the tracking nunber and explained the situation. So what can I do against this guy? Should I leave him a negative feedback and risk him leaving one back in retaliation and ruining my ebay reputation?

talk to the guy and see what he has to say. tell him he has to at least pay for your shipping cost. he needs to have the courtesy to inform you first before doing all these charge backs...

Request his phone number through ebay and call him and see what he has to say. I would make him pay shipping + listing fees or else I would leave feedback. Good Luck,
Jonny

Updates
I sent him this message on eBay:
You purchased the item and paid for it through PayPal, having it shipped to your Confirmed address. However, you issued a chargeback a day before the item arrived, costing me shipping both ways and ebay fees. I suspect that you have changed your mind at the last minute and used the chargeback as a last resort to get a refund.
His response:
Hello I apoligize for the problem and the shipping charges you had to pay for but someone hacked intomy account and ordered numerous things from ebay, I sorry for any incovienence this may have caused yuou but I have already filed for fraud with the credit card company, sorry, please I would appreciate it if you did not leave any negative or neutral feedback, if you want to leave positive just for our own good, I will do the same, thanks bye.
What do you guys think?

He didn't offer to reimburse you the shipping and ebay fees which any decent person would do.
So he's claiming someone hacked into his *eBay* account and ordered things that would be shipped to HIS address? Doesn't make sense.
I think you need to talk to eBay to resolve the issue.

I believe him BECAUSE if it was anything other than that, you'd never see your product again.
Also, You cannot file a charge back against your own credit card through paypal within just a weeks time. It takes two weeks for paypal to even attempt a reversal after their "investigation".
The only way that you would have seen a fraud reversal that quick is if it WAS a fraud, which explains why the package was refused.
In short, I believe him, but you can always do a completed items search by bidder and see what he bid on around that time if ya want.
What was the bidders ID?

Well if my account had been hacked I don't think I'd be offering to pay for shipping on items I didn't buy either. Wouldn't it make sense to withdraw the money from your paypal account so that there can't be a chargeback?
