Default Calendar shoot

Howdy folks. I'm doing a calendar shoot for a car site. I shot these over the weekend at one of the shoots. I liked some of them, so I'll share. Comments and suggestions are welcomed.

(I don't know if this will work since photobucket seems to keep super reducing these for some reason).

Great job Jaime. Some critique - just my opinions of course.

First pic - very nice, but I would have prefered the whole car in the pic or at least not cropping off the bottom of the front rim, the models toes and the lower edge of the front spoiler.

Second pic - very nice!

Third pic - love the composition but it looks a bit underexposed - if you have the raw just tweak the exposure a bit - I think it will pop - if it gets a bit light then add a little saturation.

Fourth - nice but I might like to see a bit more depth of field (smaller aperture).

Fifth - nice style but again, why cut her feet off?

On the first pic, I was trying to focus on her rather than the car, per se. I shot it shallow to try and bring her out as sharp as possible since we were shooting into a shadow. I had the white balance set for shade, which I think helped some. I was shooting in full manual too, which I tried to bracket some shots by over/under exposing depending on what I saw in the viewfinder. I think I also wasn't all that crazy about her footwear, so I subconciously (sp?) croped it out...

Second, that's actually one of my favorites. It was shot at the wrong time of the day (as I had direct sunlight) but I cranked it down a couple of stops and took it. Again, I was trying to practice that day with full manual mode. Some pics turned out horribly over/under exposed because I'm not used to checking the metering before every shot. I am now, but that's after a full day of practicing it. I'll get better at it eventually.

Third, you are exactly right. As I mentioned before I was trying to shoot full manual and playing with the exposure levels. That one was shot just before the second pic, and I was trying to shade the car out of direct sunlight. The meter was reading the backlight off the back wall. So I had to crank down on the exposure about a full stop if I remember correctly. Maybe I should've trusted the cam's meter a little more. What I really should've done is shot 2-3 more pics just like it, but changing the exposure in each. I kinda liked that pic too. It does look a little better in it's full resolution. Photobucket for some reason shrunk them way down, so that exaggerates the exposure some too.

Fourth and Fifth, you're right. I was shooting with a very shallow DOF all day. I'm very partial to that if I'm being honest. I've always liked the subject to be clear and the rest by the way side. Sometimes it works and sometimes I regret it. That's one of the things I have to work on. I shot all day at 2.8 and 5.6.

The model was actually about 25 feet in front of the car. I was on my belly taking the last shot. I was trying to stay as still as possible because it was asking to be shot at like 1/20 if I remember correctly. It was very cold and she was freezing. She did great staying still. In between takes, her BF would rush up and put a coat on her. So I was trying to hurry up and shoot as fast as possible, but with freaking 1/20 it's hard to rush too much.

I do have to work on my DOF. Like I said, I'm partial to a very shallow shot most of the time unless I'm trying to do something different.

Thanks for the advice Paul.

Here are some from a recent visit to the Mountains and getting caught in the subsequent snow storm: Again critiques and comments are welcomed.

Photobucket once again shrunk these way down. Does anyone know possibly why? I've reduced the pic to 1000x667, some are even shot in lower resolution to begin with. My other pics in my photobucket album come out in full screen, while these all came out smaller. Any suggestions since CL won't let me upload them directly to here?

Jamie,

At least you have a steady shot at 1/20th of a second. One of the guys that I used to help out would shake at 1/125th of a second. Pretty bad. He would look at me really wierd when I can hand hold a 1 second sharp shot.

I'm telling you, it looks a lot better at full resolution.

I can't figure out why photobucket keeps shrinking them down, even after I've reduced them already before uploading.

Thank you Magneto.

Percy, Sometimes it is hard when you slow it down past 1/20th for me too, especially if the weather doesn't cooperate... It was a lot colder and windier than was forecast, so I was lucky to get that to tell the truth. I like using the tri or monopod a lot. Where we were shooting I could get down low w/o the ground totally affecting the shot.....I was trying to get fancy with it you know.....

I need to practice handholding below 1/20th anyway.

Thanks for the props.

I guess to limit the amount of bandwidth used.

You'd think so, but I deleted a bunch of pics I had on there before and it still did it. The other pics I have on there on my account I merely reduced them to 1000 x whatever and they come out full when linking them.

Heck of an eye there bud. Yes, they did have condensation.

He has just gotten that car back out of the body shop where it got that fancy paint job. They uninstalled his headlights and obviously screwed them up. That day was the first time they'd done that, according to him. So as they say, the show must go on and we shot the photoshoot.
