This week in germanys biggest car magazin Auto Motor und Sport was an extreme braketest and the GS430 was the only one that failed the test. They tested BMW 325i, Opel Zafira 2,2i, Mercedes ML500, VW Fox 1,4, Dacia Logan 1,4, Nissan Micra 1,2, Toyota Aygo 1,0, Mazda 5 1,8 MZR, Fiat Panda 1,2 8V, Lexus GS430 . This is also the ranking.
Test 1: 10 times braking from 100km/h to 0. (Lexus cold brake 39m (good) warm average of 40m)
Test 2: Braking on different surfaces on each side from 100km/h to 0. (Lexus not stopping within 150m which was the end of the testzone)
Test 3: Highspeed fading test. 10 times braking, 9 times braking from 80% of the cars max speed (Lexus 190km/h) to 70 km/h with an average braking of 5m/s2, 10th from the same speed to a full stop with maximum braking (Lexus 173m/8,1m/s2).
Test 4: Driving down the Grossglockner Mountainroad in Austria with the highest gear, max Load and an average speed of 50km/h hold by using the brake only. At the end max braking from 100km/h to a full stop on a 8% downhill. (The Lexus was the only car that could not take part in this test because the rear brakes were down after test 1-3. The same test with a new brake showed the same results. Lexus Japan already made the same test which also showed the same results.These tests are part also of the development and this problem did not occur.)
i'm sure lexus is working hard to fix this problem...the european market is an important market for them in addition to the US so they'll want to correct this soon and get back in there.

sorry you are wrong. all lexus japan did was sending a letter to the magazines which said that this conditions will not happen to the average GS driver and that he is on the safe side.
Seems like having the rotors drilled/slotted and having better aftermarket "performance" pads would fix the problem, no? Tires also play a large part in braking. Where all cars equipped with identical tires?

even cheap familiy cars did the test - positive - NOT the new GS. i can imagine what will happen in the US when you live in SF or in the mountain regions.... means many $$$$ for toyota.

Stock pads are generally not good for repeated hard braking especially when the vehicle is heavy like the GS. If you guys are worried, just slap on some high performance pads and you will be good to go.
but why should you take sport pads to pass the and the other cars dont? All cars were tested stock. Because of the highspeeds on the Autobahn it is very important to have a competitive brake system. When you drive 700km on the Autobahn with highspeeds you have a lot of situations where you have to brake heavily fom over 200km/h to around 80km/h.

i just wonder if the test was done because of good sales of new GS in germany... whenever an foreign car starts selling well, German mag finds some "terrible" issue with it...
I wonder how they didnt notice brakes failing before, when they tested it on the track and did repetitive brake tests...

note that the 3rdGenGS are using 4piston calipers in front ... and still its braking performance is below average .... sad ... but also an indication that BBK are not always better ...
In this case ... the rear brakes failed, so the 3rdGen GS rears are too weak, and the GS brake balance is not good ...
braking distance was not a problem, besides test 2 which might be a software problem. But the rear brakes were worn out after the first 3 tests which meant they could not drive test 4 without putting new brakes in. BTW they did the test 2 with new pads and rotors and had the same results. They also checked disc temps and the GS rear disk temps were so high that parts of the pads stucked on the discs. I guess it is either an temperature/venting problem or the pad manufacturer delivered a different quality.
